83.0. "Hot-air Balloons" by 45830::KCAMPBELL (Happy New Year!) Mon Jan 09 1989 13:13

Just wondered if anyone else had seen all those hot-air balloons
drifting merrily over Bramley/Mortimer last Saturday morning? And, if
so, what was going on...

    I watched a number of them taking off from a field near Marsh Benham.
    There was a crowd of them jostling each other to take off. There was a
    paragraph in one of the papers, apparently more than 80 were due to
    take part. I can't remember who was supposed to be organising it
    (there was no obvious organisation in the field !).

    And one of them only just got to Thatcham..... it landed in a field
    just on the north side of the A4 just to the east of Thatcham...

    much to the delight of my two year old.

    I was playing rugby in Newbury when the sky darkened and these things
    went puff-puffing over. Most distracting. Difficult to keep your
    eye on the ball. We lost 46-8. A ploy engineered by the local team?
    That's my guess, anyway.

83.7The Icicle MeetYARD::HARWOODJudy Harwood - UCG - 7 781 4347Tue Jan 10 1989 11:176
     The balloons were participating in the Annual Icicle Meet which
     takes place over one weekend in early January. Hence the name.
     Balloonists and spectators come from all over the world to this
     event during which several competitions take place.
     Weather permitting, flights take place twice each day from a field
     just off the A4 between Newbury and Hungerford.

    PS We also see the odd baloon drifting over our home some Sunday
        mornings too...
83.9Balloons over Blazing SmokeSHAPES::PURDYMTue Jan 17 1989 10:067
    I counted at least 17 hot air balloons over Blazing Smoke and 1
    landed in the field next to my house narrowly missing my fence and
    knocking down the park fence it looked very dangerous to me. I
    reckon they must be mad.

    It is almost a year since this note was first entered.....

    I saw in a local paper that this event/race is being repeated
    this weekend (6/7th Jan).

    Does anyone know where or when, or whether the public can go and
    watch??

    As stated earlier, the meet is at Marsh Benham, 1/4 mile south of the
    A4 between Newbury & Hungerford. Balloons will be lifting on noth
    saturday and sunday mornings weather permitting. I have been several
    times and it is a fine spectacle. If anyone is thinking of going, you
    should aim to be there by first light as the bulk of balloons lift from
    between 7.15am and 9.00am (there can be upto 150 balloons lifting
    between these times). If the wind is greater than force 4, there is
    unlikely to be much activity, rain doesn't usually stop the enthusiast,
    however it makes watching a bit of a chore.

    This meet (the Icicle) takes place at the same venue on the first full
    weekend of each year.

83.12Birthday balloon flights ?PBANK::BISHOPPThu Dec 10 1992 08:4111
    Does anyone have the phone numbers of a champagne balloon flight company
    in the UK ? I'd like to take my girlfriend on one for her birthday in
    January. Lift off location (outside her house) near Basingstoke
    plenty of room - seen balloons take off from there before but never
    thought to ask. Thanks for any info in advance.
