75.0. "CRECHE FACILITIES" by KERNEL::PEWTER () Tue Dec 13 1988 14:06

Does anyone know the result of the Creche survey carried out in
    Reading a while back?

I heard second hand that if it went ahead they would be charging
about fifty pounds per child, per week. This would take a sizeable
chunk of anyones wages, and it's worse if you have more than one
    child.

Considering that the amount of school leavers is dropping rapidly
every year, opportunities for women can only improve. When you consider
the amount of training a company like Digital gives it's employees
it must be worth providing creche facilities for those who don't
want their careers to screech to a halt for five years whilst they
    bring up a family.

However, the cost of private nursery care is so high it is not worth
working for a lot of women after paying for this care.

Apparently other European countries provide far superior child care,
most of it state run. It may be relevant that in these countries
all children are regarded as precious, not just to be seen and not
    heard.

50 pounds per week is about the going rate for a Registered
    Childminder today.

I agree it makes sense for large companies, who have invested
a fair amount in an individual to try to keep that individual
working for them. However they have to strike a balance too.

I think it depends on what the woman wants. A true long term
career would give a higher salary, and probably job satisfaction.
However it would be at the 'expense' of not seeing the child(ren)
for a considerable part of the time. Even part-time is not an
ideal 'halfway house' in my opinion. (My wife has tried both).

.. and no I know nothing about the creche facilities. :-)

My sister is qualified Nursery Nurse and would be interested in
running a creche for Digital. I asked our Personell Dept, who said
there is no such facility. She will have to try IBM!

Tell your sister to speak to Nellie Northmore in Reading Personnel
    - I know that she played a major role in setting up the Reading
    Creche plans.

    re;1

As a working mother (who returned to work when my kid's started
school) I know only too well the cost of childminding. But even
registered childminders charges can vary dramatically, in spite
of the guidelines in place. I had two quotes for my two children
for care after school each day until about 5pm. One was for 35 pounds
the other 15. Both registered. I took the lower quote and now have
an excellent childminder who looks after my children very well.

It is easier for me as my children are at school. But there are still
a lot of problems that arise using registered childminders. For
instance, my last childminder decided to leave the area and gave
me two weeks notice. (I didn't think my kid's were THAT bad) There
ensued a mad panic to find a suitable replacement.

What happens if you are not happy with a minder? You have to rely
on recommendations and the best are usually taken anyway.

Some women HAVE to work, despite a desire to be with their babies.
