Hi, my name is Simon Maufe and I have just started working for DEC
at the Customer Support Centre. I am interested in peoples views
on places to live (ie rent a room) in the Basingstoke area. I
would really like a discussion of the different towns around
Basingstoke eg :
Average rent of rooms in shared houses (ie is Winchester REALLY expensive?),
How much rentable accomodation there is,
The social life (pubs!) of the town, and,
The travelling time to the CSC by car (very important).
From what I know so far somewhere to the south of Basingstoke sounds
a good match. I don't really fancy Basingstoke town itself cos it
has too much concrete and too many roundabouts for a northern lad
like myself.

Don't try Tadley/Aldermaston
1) you glow in the dark.
2) The pub's no good
3) the rent's VERY expensive
4) you have to get into basingstoke before 8.30 , otherwise TRAFFIC

There's more than one pub in Tadley / Aldermaston, and there is
more than one road into Basingstoke....

sorry - I meant pubs (pl) - and if there's any other way of getting
to Blazingsmoke, other than past the ?Post House? (or whatever
the hotel is, I'd be delighted to know.

As someone who comes from this area and has done the journey for
years, yes the road up to The Ladbroke Hilton (passed Basingstoke
District Hospital) can get snarled up. Ever tried going through
Ramsdell/Wolverton etc. - being dense, it really depends on where
you work - which building? Perhaps you can give more info and I
maybe able to help.
Re. the pubs - what's wrong with good ale at the Pineapple? The
Mole, The Vyne, The Hare & Hounds, etc. etc.
Perhaps a better tour of the area would be in order from someone
who knows it a little better than you chaps......
