48.5 | Try Maplin or Electromail | RDGE28::EBDON | Terry Ebdon, ADG Support 7-781 4381 | Wed Oct 19 1988 18:04 | 6 |
| You could always try mail order, both Maplins and Electromail
(AKA RS Components AKA Radio Spares) can normally deliver next
day. These two companies can normally provide everything you need.
RS can be a bit prcey, but just about any one7s cheaper than Tandy.

| If your really serious, there is a MAPLIN's in Southampton that
stocks just about everything (electrical that is). Ok I know its
not Basingstoke, but what is.

| I would endorse Thirlwall & Allen in Winchester Street. They look from
the street like a rather snooty Hi-Fi emporium (well a step up from Comet &
Dixons anyway) but they have a spares department upstairs and sell all sorts of
components. They also do repairs and I saw people picking up a very ancient
looking music centre that had been repaired.
Customer service in Tandy is the absolute pits. It is the fault of
Tandy of course hiring people who appear to know zilch about what they are
selling. This applies to many shops but in the case of this sort of specialist
retail outlet seems very counter-productive. How they justify their uniformly
high prices I have no idea.

| I agree that Tandy are not up to much either on price or selection.
Some years ago when I needed some 2114 memory chips I wasn't able
to get them from my usual supplier due to early closing or something
so I thought I'd have a try at the local Tandy. The chips normally
cost #1.50 but Tandy had other ideas. Each chip was mounted on
a 10"x6" bubble pack card and was priced at #11.50 ! I spent about
five minutes arguing with the counter moron that this was obviously
a misprint but he would have none of it. Neither would I so I left
the shop chipless.
I have rarely visited Tandy since, anything I need these days comes
from Maplin.
