Sounds a similar film to Biloxi Blues starring Mathew Broderick.

Great film, funny and autobiographical. Neil Simon wrote it.

Talking of cinemas, why has noone ever opened a "drive in movie"
in this country? Well I don't think there are any...

As long as it were away from residential areas I think it would
attract alot of interest. You could even take the kids, once they
were asleep,& avoid the need for baby-sitters.

     Any young entrepreneurs out there?

...Nairobi, fab place... brings back memories. Liked the drive-ins,
hated the mosquitoes. The weather was something one could rely on,
and no snow to contend with either.

    Hi Lucie,

    Wheres the Hilton National ?

I knew about the cinema that used to be in the Mercury (before it
was called the Ladbroke Lodge on the Aldermaston Road Roundabout.
And of course I remember the one in town (Lower Wote St ?) when
it was one cinema, I remember collecting ABC minor badges hee hee
    :-)
OHMIGOD! I never thought I would reach the time when I looked back
on things I did 20 years ago! aargh :-(

Then again, was the Mercury renamed to the Ladbroke lodge ? or
    something else ?

Uh oh memory is going now, what else ? (rhetorical question)
40.15The name changes, the service stays the same.RDGE00::RUSSELLI'm sorry, I haven't a clue.Thu Oct 13 1988 13:1814
    Re the hotels...

Mercury hotels were taken over by Ladbrokes; and then renamed Ladbroke
    Hotels.

Ladbrokes built another one, and called this one the Ladbroke Lodge.

Ladbrokes then bought the non-US part of Hilton Hotels, and renamed
their Ladbroke hotels and lodges as Hiltons instead.

    Simple, innit?

    Peter.

Was in Nairobi way back in 1972, and lived 'westlands'. Prior to that
roamed around Kisumu, Voi, Mombasa, (another fabo place... have u been
to those beaches towards Malindi?.. nothing to match it round here...
and the weather, glorious... the only word for it)

I could ramble on, but... 'talking' about Kenya in a Blazingsmoke conf
is just hitting below the belt... besides, i have to drive that way
right now and with Kenya in my mind i might just end up in some ditch
along that a33... Oh, one thing good around here, not likely to find
the odd rhinoceros on that dualcarrageway. ;-)

On Saturday we went to the cinema in Basingstoke to see t'other film
that's on - BUSTER. What surprised me was that the support films they used
to show prior to the "big film" had been replaced by lots of adverts.
I lost count of the number of those that were for some sort of drink!

Whatever happened to the good old days?

    Hello Steve,

Yeah the Hilton National is just the new name for the Mercury!
Which still stands over by Popley. Sounds everso grand but its
the same ol' place - except of course for their new all singing
and dancing 'piano bar' PALMS - everso up market it is (she said
    tongue in cheek!!!!)

Yes, like CLOUDS (which used to be the Beacon, then became the Beacon
again after the neighbours complained) and whatitsname that used
to be the King of Wessex - the best poOSsible taste :-) Or any Yuppie
pub that sells Miller or Budweiser for that matter. Thank goodness
I can always go into to Boston and get a decent pint of Guinness
in The Black Rose if I need to :-)
