129.0. "VTX & VAXnotes uses in Insurance Industry?" by GLDOA::CROWN (Roger Crown @FHO) Fri Sep 18 1992 12:11
Please review the attached notes entry which I entered into the
Health Care & VTX Marketing notesfiles.
I am seeking examples of VTX and VAXnotes usage within Managed
Care and HealthCare industries.
Insurance industry examples will also be appropriate as the
Managed Care business, from a claims processing perspective,
is similar to Insurance.
Thanks for your input.

Note 238.0 VAXnotes -or- VTX uses in HCI accounts? 3 replies

Does anyone have experience with customers using VAXnotes or VTX
in HealthCare accounts?
I am interested in usage in managed care organizations, secondly, by
hospitals.
I am particularly interested in the sort of applications that customers
are using these products for.
Questions:
- Application of products
- Problems solved/addressed by implementing products
- Benefits derived
- Reactions from users
- I.S. related applications
- End-user related applications
- Size of organization (# of employees)
Thanks for your input.

Probably the first adapter of VTX in the Healthcare or related field
was the FDA. 7 years or so ago, they gave their field people access to
their policy and procedures files that were kept at their headquarters.
Their first implementation was for 500 field people. The useage
exceeded their expectations, particularly since they thought their
policy and procedures were well understood and memorized. I have
not kept up on what their current useage is, but that kind of sets
the tone.
We have given numerous demos and overviews in corporate visits.
I would suggest that the whole idea of Lotus notes, etc. is only
more proof positive of the need of this type of access to relatively
static and centrally managed data as well as interactive conferencing
managed by a set of rules and with a monitor.
Also, don't forget, there are options now with the portable P/Cs,
front end GUIs and voice that extend the potential for remote access,
dial in Access, and QUIK CHKS from car phones. (How many times have
you been going to a location and forgotten the room?)
In healthcare the applications are legion:
Menus
Policies ---\_______Kind of useful when they old JCAHO comes knocking
Procedures--/
Test Procedures
Bulletin Board activity around conferences, clinics, etc
Papers published or in progress that students want access to
Kiosks in lobbys for directions to locations
Recordings or Hardcopy output on standard Pre/Post-op proceedures
I think you get the drift. What has not happened and what could be
an opportunity, would be to sell a small consulting project to
define and create a small application for a high traffic area or
activity, install it on an existing system with placement of a handful
of terminals or P/C front ends. and use that as a stepping stone to
bigger and more involved stand alone or server based VTX databases.
Kind of the Trojan Horse approach. Start with no visible acquisition
of equipment, get them hooked, let it simmer and then close.

Boston Children's Hospital, I believe, uses VAXNotes. Check with their
sales rep. Joanne Beepot, for more information...
