Looking for a little advice from those in the insurance industry. Is there opportunity for Digital to provide a service to the insurance industry that will supply it with a resource to audit customers' computer rooms? Companies we sell to, insure computer rooms for thier clients. There must be thousands of computer rooms or facilities that need an audit to certify them as insurable or to assess risk. There are few companies in the world to rival DEC's expertise when it comes to computer equipment and facilities. If an insurance company could outsource to us for this service it could reduce thier operating costs in the amount of staff they must keep on hand for such purposes. And in these times that's a definite selling point. Probably a little simplistic to most of you but what are the drawbacks in all of this? (try not to talk all at once I'm a slow reader!{vogonball}) jk

Companies which insure large property risks usually employ specialized engineers who evaluate the property for such things as structual integrity, fire prevention, etc. I would believe these same people would be more than capable of evaluating the construction of a computer facility. I don't know what added value Digital could bring to the table, other than advise the client as to what additional environmental protection we could offer. Bob | |||||

Thanks for the reply Bob, A possible added value would be using us as a resouce for that type of evaluation. This would enable them to reduce that staff cutting thier operating costs. We have engineers located at the district level that can provide these services along with their usual retinue. A recent missed opportunity was a request from AMOCO oil to have their computer room audited. They needed an independent party to do the audit. The request came from their headquarters. I believe we lost the bid due to bad costing but the buisness is there. Perhaps the buisness would not come from the insurance companies but it seems like a good place to start. What I'm getting at and what I'd like to see is a new revenue souce that Digital can add with no initial investment. Again thanks for the advice and ANY comments are welcome! Jeff |
