57.1 | Initial plans for LOMA Systems Forum | FOOZLE::BAKER | | Sun Nov 06 1988 16:29 | 18 |
| The theme of the 1989 LOMA Systems Forum is "Reaping the Benefits of
Technology". Work is presently underway to define the demonstrations, and to
position speakers on the panels and seminars that will be held. As of today,
we have been invited to participate in a seminar on Expert Systems
(discussing the direction that Expert Systems are expected to take in the
future and applications of Expert Systems in the insurance industry OTHER
than underwriting [which everyone appears to be attempting in one form or
another!]). There is also a good potential that we will be invited to
participate in the seminar on Networking, and that one of our customers will
be invited to speak on their networking strategy.
We are developing a number of demonstrations and anticipate that, at minimum,
Digital image capabilities (with windows and Epic) will be shown, along with
the new DECvoice product (which will be heard rather than shown).
Suffice it to say that we are working hard to organize Digitals presence at
this show, and that there will be further material in VAXnotes.

| LOMA SYSTEMS FORUM
PROPOSED DIGITAL ACTIVITY
16-Nov-1988
Every three years the Life Office Management Association stages a major event
called the LOMA Systems Forum. The next Systems Forum will be March 19-22
1989 in Orlando Florida. At the last Systems Forum, virtually all our target
accounts were present and were represented by the CIO or an immediate deputy.
Suffice it to say that with this kind of participation it is a major event.
The LOMA Systems Forum is an ideal opportunity for you to leverage short term
sales and to show that Digital is a credible and competitive player in the
Insurance Industry Systems Field.
Our presence at the show has not yet been finalized, and is subject to change
over the next four to six weeks, however the following are all concrete plans
at the moment:
SEMINARS AND PRESENTATIONS
Working closely with LOMA, we have placed two Digital speakers on the agenda
for the forum (for Expert Systems and Network Planning). The Expert Systems
presentation will address the technical direction that expert systems are
taking and some of the newer uses of expert systems in the insurance
industry. The Networking presentation will discuss network planning
(considering the dynamic and uncertain world the insurance industry is now
living in), and flexible topology (as it could apply in the industry).
It is also possible that Kodak will be on one of the panels talking about
their Image capabilities.
DEMONSTRATIONS
The Theme of the Show is "Reaping the Benefits of Technology", and we
expect to follow along with the theme "Harvesting through Enterprise
Integration". From the Insurance Industry Advisory Board and the Insight
Group, it has become clear that the top technology issue for the industry is
image and the top business issue is customer service. In this context we
will show two and possibly three demonstrations (the CIT demonstration is,
at the time of writing, not pinned down) that will focus on these issues:
1. ENTERPRISE WIDE IMAGE
This station will be a demonstration of Image, Compound Document
handling (something the competition cannot do), Windows and Epic,
mailing compound documents and overall integration .
The demonstration scenario will show an accidental death claims
processing unit, scanning a document, linking it to previously
stored information through a customers RdB index, and creating and
transmitting a compound document. In addition, in one of the windows
will be access to a Lotus 123 data base (through VMS services). This
Lotus 123 data base is continuously being changed through a PC, and
as soon as changes are made they are reflected on the claim
processors Image work station.
2. CUSTOMER SERVICE - THE UNIFIED ANSWER
A. DECvoice
DECvoice will be positioned as the ideal method of providing
customer service in response to clearly defined issues and
questions. The demonstration (which will take advantage of one or
the DECvoice demonstrations already created will focus on either the
Health Care marketplace or the Life Insurance Marketplace) and will
include simulated access to mainframe files for information.
The demonstrator will also be able to talk about the development
environment (the Cullinet "Application Expert), which is one of the
key advantages of this technology over some of the competition.
While there are some demonstrations of the "Application Expert"
available, they are not well suited to a show environment. Any
further interest in this area should be focused to the sales force
and one of the ACTs that the product is installed in.
This demonstration will be provided through a telephone (with
speakerphone attachment) which will be dialed into DECtalk
operations in Hartford. The details of the demonstration are
currently under discussion with the DECvoice Marketing Group.
B. Computer Integrated Telephony
The demonstration of CIT will be positioned as an integration of the
Home Office customer telephone service operations. It will be a
"stand alone" with the ability to transfer video and voice between
stations automatically, as well as retrieve information from
previously created files based on the number of the calling party (a
capability which will be available as part of the digitization of
voice telephony on a nationwide basis within two years).
C. Datalogics - Integrated Electronic Publishing
Datalogics will be positioned as a exceptional way to respond to
publishing requirements for such documents as Group Booklets. The
demonstration itself will show how the group Booklet process works,
and how variables are introduced so that each booklet is
personalized for the specific employees condition.
3. DIGITAL SERVICES
At this time we expect that there will be two demonstration stations
that address Digitals service capabilities in the area of Enterprise
Planning and Network Management. Details of these are being worked
out.
4. EXECUTIVE PRESENCE
In order to provide an opportunity for customer executives to meet
Digital executives, we are presently exploring the possibility of at
least one member of Digital senior management being present at the
show, and hosting a Digital suite.
At the present time, the Image and DECvoice demonstrations are considered to
be firm, with the balance of the program subject to change as conditions
develop.

57.6 | LOMA - Visits with Dec Execs | FOOZLE::BAKER | | Fri Feb 03 1989 12:55 | 75 |
| LOMA EXECUTIVE VISIT MANAGEMENT PLAN
03-Feb-1989 09:14
INTRODUCTION
During the LOMA Systems Forum, Claude Thomas (VP, Financial Services Industry
Marketing), Norm Goldberg (Manager, Financial Industry Systems Group), Joel
Arker (Manager, Image Marketing) and Bob Russell (VP, Software Services)
will be available for meetings with customers.
The purpose of this memo is to outline the procedures to be used to schedule
these meetings, and the responsibilities of each of the players in the
process. It is important that sales reps proceed swiftly to set up meetings
for their customers, since the number of time slots for each executive are
limited.
a. Working with Chuck Shields of the IFT, the field representative identifies
a customer who wishes to meet with one of the Digital Executives.
b. The representative send an E-mail to Chuck (DTN 367-2107, or Charles
Shields @ ceo) identifying the customer, the customer representative (name
& title), two choices of times for the visit and two choices of Executive
to visit with.
c. Chuck will establish the priority of the visit, based on the status of the
customer (target, secondary target or target of opportunity), and will
forward copies of the E-mail to Karin Ball @AET and John Baker @ AET, as
well as anyone else he deems appropriate. Karen will establish the time
for the visit (and name the Executive if no specific name is requested),
sending a response to the representative and to Chuck.
d The representative will follow up with a briefing paper sent via e-mail
(to Chuck and Karen Ball).
Without a briefing paper, the visit may not take place.
The briefing paper will include (at a minimum):
1. Customer name, title
2. Customer company name
3. Current installed Digital base
4. Customer Business concerns
5. Issues and concerns between Digital and the customer
6. Opportunities
7. Other comments
Chuck is responsible for following up and making certain that a briefing
paper has been sent.
f. At the event itself, it will be the responsibility of the IFT and the
sales force to ensure that the customer knows the time and location of the
meeting, and is escorted to it.
g. Karin Ball and Beverly Amirault will be responsible for maintaining the
schedules for the Digital Executives and for ensuring that they are aware
of all meeting schedules. They will also be responsible for providing the
executives with appropriate briefing papers before the meetings.
NOTE:
o In scheduling visits, priority will be given to the larger (top 20)
insurance companies until March 10. After March 10, visits will be
scheduled in the order in which they are received.
o Representatives should submit there requests for visits to Chuck
Shields as soon as possible REGARDLESS of the size of their customer.
Confirmations on companies in the top 20 will be supplied
immediately. Confirmation on other companies will only be released
after the top 20 have been scheduled.

57.7 | Put the demos in the field! | MUSKIE::WALSH | | Thu Mar 30 1989 19:07 | 22 |
| Congratulations on an excellent presentation at the LOMA FORUM!
We have heard nothing but excellent comments in the field from accounts
who attended!
Now that the show is over, the memory of the demos remains strong
in the minds of many customers and DEC sales people who saw it.
Of particular interest is the Enterprise imaging demo. We have several
accounts we think would benefit from such a demo, and wondered if
we could get a list of the software (along with the sources and
personnel who developed it), to set up the Enterprise Imageing demo
in our office. While we can't perhaps duplicate it exactly, we could
do some work-arounds to make up a look-alike presentation.
Also, when will this demo be installed at the Hartford ACT?
This is exactly the type of thing we would like to see more of in
the field!
Thanks for the information.....

57.8 | LOMA DEMOS AND THE ACT | FOOZLE::BAKER | | Fri Mar 31 1989 17:12 | 14 |
| Work is already underway to install these demos in the ACT. Please
recognize that, as they stand, the demos may appear to be robust
- but they are not. We plan to make them stronger over the next
couple of months. Also recognize that they used "pre release" DECwrite,
and DECdecision software where all the features DID NOT WORK. The
demonstrators became very adept at "working round" these problems,
but any request to "see how something works' (e.g. cut and paste
from an image to a compound document) caused trouble.
The long and short is that the tapes containing the demos have already
been delivered to the ACT for VERY SELECTIVE USE. The enhanced,
robust demos, using a new and improved version of the DECwrite and
DECdecision software will be made available as soon as possible,
but this could be a couple of months from now.

| re .7 and .8
Couldn't get to the LOMA conference (bit far for us to come I'm
afraid) but very interested indeed in any demo material that could
be transported across the pond.
Please make sure we in London DCC are included in any distribution
plans for demo software.
