                                  INTRODUCTION

                         Larry Carpenter, Susan Hillson

Welcome to the wonderful world of Database Systems! This is the first in a

series of bulletins published by Database Systems Engineering in an effort to

increase the awareness of the Digital community on the importance of database

management systems. Articles will vary from low level to highly technical in

their complexity.

Please forward this to anyone who may benefit from this information. If you

would like to be added or removed from the distribution list or submit an

article for publication, send mail with your name, node, and organization to

BANZAI::CARPENTER. For new subscriptions, please indicate your primary database

of interest, Rdb/VMS, VAX DBMS, or both.

Information is increasingly being recognized as a vital corporate resource and

almost every business activity requires information of some type. Businesses

keep track of inventory, accounts payable, accounts receivable, banks keep track

of accounts, and transactions posted to those accounts, and hospitals keep track

of patient information, billing information, and various medical facts. But, in

order to make the best use of the available information, it must be organized in

a particular way. The organization that has all the information it needs, when

it needs it, has the competitive edge.

In the early days of computing there was an emphasis on processing. However

this has changed considerably, and databases play a more important part today's

applications. A database allows an organization's data to be processed as an

integrated whole, rather than having separate files for each application.

Information is organized in such a way that it can be easily accessed.

What we hope to do with these bulletins, is to provide information about

database systems. Answers to questions like 'Who Needs a Database?' and 'How

does that feature really work?'will be addressed. If you have an article that

you feel should be published here, please send it in.

Who is Database Systems Engineering? We are the engineering organization

responsible for developing VAX DBMS, VAX Rdb/VMS, VAX DATA DISTRIBUTOR, VIDA,

VAX SQL and their related components. In addition to these products, we also

have several advanced development projects, database tools development, and us,

Database Systems Consulting.

Our goal in database systems engineering, is "Industry Leadership by 1991".
