Does anyone know of examples where customers have developed their
systems on VAX, using CASE products like VAX Cobol generator, for
porting onto IBM for live running?
This is an approach that can offer impressive time savings and
productivity gains, and I would like to know if we have any references
in the insurance industry.
Looking forward to receiving some replies.

This question has come up a number of times in the Cobol Generator notes file but I have not heard of any reference sites. (See note number 610 in CLT::COBOL_GENERATOR_OLD for more information.) Netron, Inc. has a product called the NETRON/CAP Development Center which will allow you to develop IBM Cobol on a VAX and I believe that they have some reference sites. (See page 593 of the current issue of the VAX Software Source Book or call Andy Altay in Canada at (416) 636-8333 for more information.) This whole concept has been a very emotional issue inside Digital over the years so I would encourage you to proceed carefully. Benson | |||||

Di,
What a pity I was off sick when you asked this question. Of course
I know the answer. The only trouble is that I am now half way through
this message and I cannot remember the name of the organisation
nor do I know how to cancel the reply so I guess I will just have
to leave you and all our readers hanging while I do some research.
Back soon..... M.

The answer is of course CINCOM. There is quite a big write-up in
the September issue of DEC PROFESSIONAL and I believe they will
be very willing to be used as a reference site.
Hope this little gem doesn't come too late to be of use.

| 51.5 | Netron Pilot at GTE | AUNTB::KNIGHTLI | Wed Oct 19 1988 13:56 | 17 | |
GTE South has just finished a Netron pilot in which they allegedly
developed 50,000 lines of code to run under CICS and DB2 in under
16 weeks, using 3 people who didn;t know VAXES, or Netron. The
customer is wildly happy, and we are attending a presentation on
November 17th at which GTE is presenting the results to customers
in the Carolinas District. Royal Insurance and Jefferson Pilot
Insurance are attending. Netron runs on PCs and other platforms,
but this study supposedly proves the value of using VAxes, LSE,
and other VAXset tools. There are quit a few restrictions, such
as type of editor, etc. used on the IBM side, but evidently if these
restrictions are met, Netron produces CICS Cobol code for VSAM or
DB2. I will report back when more details are gathered. I am not
intimately involved, nor am I technical, but if my customers like
what they hear, I would presume every other insurance company would
like it also.
