successful and we just sold them an upgrade to a VAX 8350 with 100

Our team, as Mike Garner pointed out, works with marketing and sales
to be sure that we are properly focused in this industry and that,
in particular, we have appropriate coverage and sales efforts in
the Top 50 insurance companies in the U.S. We are also assisting
with the larger Blue Cross - Blue Shield plans, helping the NIA
manager for all Blues, Lou Ennuso (also at ACI). In addition, we are
encouraging each area to have its own insurance expertise. We hope
that each of the areas will have on staff people like us who can
be available for sales efforts with the next tier of companies,
as well as carrying on our efforts with the Top 50 companies and
the Blues. We are very aware how frustrating it is for sales people
that we cannot come out to help personally with the smaller insurance
companies; but there are just three of us, and we already are in
a dozen frequent flyer clubs each. So talk it up in the areas!!
(That, friends, is a sales pitch).

have their decision makers in this district. Our approach is top
down, the first target in the company is CEO (or Managing Director
or General Manager). We are trying to interest Business management,
showing that we have the technology to solve their Business problems.
This has provided a number of good oppurtunities.
The incumbent is inevitably, you guessed it, Big Blue.
Although many of the companies previously had an IBM only policy,
they seem happy to include Digital in their startegies. Many have
seen and appreciated the technology. The significant point now is
to provide packages to this market. There seem to be so few of them
and we are finding it a slow process to discover them. Access to
the list of Known current packages will be of great use.

We will be following this conference with great interest.

My organization (U.S. Programs) is part of the great U.S. Sales
HQ in the sky. In the marketing programs segment, our job is to
work to assure that Industry (and -- sometimes -- applications
marketing) brings forward complete programs (campaigns) which help
move the sales effort forward and point sales in the direction of
their vision. On the other side of the fence, we also work to ensure
that as the industry sets that vision that it has some foundation
in the reality as seen by the line selling organization. That means
that I and my staff (about 1/5 of a very good secretary by the name
of Bernie Flood [DTN 297-5308]) have a big job to do in influence
management and causing the right things to happen. We deal in
information and the better the information I get from you -- the
folks on the front lines -- the more I can do to help your efforts.

My specific assignment is to be the marketing programs interface
for FIMG (Banking, Brokerage and Insurance, BOIS and CSG (The Bill
Steul group which includes the applications counterpart [FISG] to
Sandy Thomas' FIMG). A DECie for 13 1/2 years I started in the
old Business Products Group which was the great grand daddy of all
of the companies' commercial business back in the days when that
was a $40M business world-wide and the whole corporation consisted
of 17,000 people designing, building and selling PDP-8's, PDP-11's,
PDP-15's and DECsystem 10's to the tune of $420M world-wide. We
made what turned out to be (we didn't think it would be at the time)
an abortive effort to enter the insurance market and I still have
the arrows in my back to prove it -- some of you will still
occasionally run into potential customers who will make you wish
we hadn't tried and I apologise for that -- main point is, let me
know how I can help. As one person for the entire U.S., I have
to do most of my work through the IFT and the AM/FM's (Area Financial
Marketing) but still want to know your perception of where the needs
    are.

    Happy hunting,

Hallo. I am a member of the insurance team in the DCC / ACT. I have
8 years experience in the insurance sector, with specialist knowledge of
designing and implementing systems for general insurance, in particular
	motor underwriting and broking.

| | Telephone Conversation with Mike Whitehorn 2.9.88
Finally managed to track Mike down following our letter to John Finan of 12th
August 1988. They have been occupied with other priorities and as yet he has
not read the letter as he has had other pressing priorities.
The management team are going away for a weeks conference next week so he will
not be able to pay it any attention until the wek after that.
I explained that the reason for the call was to hopefully set up an initial
meeting to discuss the issues contained within and behind the letter.
Mike said that if i phone him w/c 19th Sept he will have given the contents his
attention and we could then have a more meaningful chat.
(Conclusion)
Mike came across as genuine (not the Davies attitude) and i believe will agree
eventually to meet. A small step for man but a great step for a midget.

    Consultant Business Manager
    Account - Coopers & Lybrand (C&L)

Interest - As C&L has an Insurance Industry consulting practice (FYI -
Mike Garner now works for C&L out of C&L's Chicago office) there may be
accounts where it would be beneficial for both Digital and C&L to develop
a closer relationship. Often it takes outside consultants to
accelerate the sales cycle and in most major opportunities these outside
consultants are far upstream from where Digital typically becomes involved.
If C&L is involved I can help or if your looking for a Digital solution I
may also be able to help.

Insurance industry (and others). Part of the Targeted Accounts Unit

before. Some probable accounts I'll be calling on include; Blue
Cross/Blue Sheild, Associates Corporation, Great American Insurance,
    Employers Casualty.

Will be working to find Digital success stories and the products,
services and strategies that enabled us to win. Open to all ideas and
seasoned advice from you who've been selling to insurance companies.
Hopefully this Notesfile is still alive . . .

What you do that makes you interested in Insurance and What you expect
to get out of this conference.
My job, Software Engineer, obviously has nothing to do with Insurance. But
being a solid seatbelt user, as well as Red Cross CPR/BLS instructor, I am
concerned about safety and reduction in serious injuries caused by the lack of
seatbelt use. Laws mandating their use are sometimes conter-productive - people
need to be convinced of their value, not forced to use them, hence my newest
topic entry to this conference.
What I expect is some serious constructive criticism of my proposal to refine
it to the point that it could conceivably be adopted and start saving more
lives by increasing seatbelt use.
