100.0. "Can't use Windows Write as note Editor" by FACIL1::DEHAAN (Holy Zarquon's Singing Fish!) Tue Aug 16 1994 01:20

    Hi!

I just loaded V1.1 and was hoping that a bug (?) was fixed, but it
    seems not to be.

When I go to Preferences and select Write as my editor-of-choice and
pick OK, I get a message box stating that the Path is Not Found, and
TDL abruptly exits - i.e. disappears from the screen, and must be
re-started. I can't find anything in the help or readme about this. Is
there a fix for this? I don't like notepad, and W4W (which does seem to
work, BTW) takes waaaaaaaayyy too long to load...

    Thanks!

Are you sure there's not something wrong with the way write is setup
under Windows for you? It works fine for me.

Where is WRITE.EXE on your system? Is it in the WINDOWS directory and
    is this in the path?

    Regards,
    Susi

Works for me too... If you still have a problem, I'll contact Keith.

    Cheers, Laurie.
100.3Write is in Windows, on the pathFACIL1::DEHAANHoly Zarquon's Singing Fish!Wed Aug 17 1994 01:2420
    re: .1 & .2,

I have just checked on my laptop (320p), and Write.Exe is in the
Windows directory, and C:\Windows is indeed on the path. I just tried
to configure for Write again, and the MsgBox pops up with "! Path/File
access error" and the OK button. This behavior occurs on all three
machines I use, and they all have DOS 6.2 and at least 8MB of memory.
When I click on OK, TDL completely goes away.

Let me know if you need any more information for Keith...

    Thanks!

P.S. Tell him I was going to send his cards from the top of Pikes Peak
while I was up there last week, but they took out the post office 2
years ago. He'll have to settle for cards bought up there and mailed
    from Colorado Springs... ;^)

Keith is in the US/Canada until Sept 3rd, but he'll look into it when
he returns. Watch this space! If he or I appear to have forgotten,
    please mail me.

    Cheers, Laurie.

Well, you didn't mail me, and what's more I forgot! Anyway, Keith has
given me a work-around. If it fixes it, let me know please so I can
tell Keith, and if not... Well likewise!

I think I know what his problem is. He probably has a directory
in his path which does not exist in reality. I've just tried that, and
it gives the error he gets. I can correct this in a future version.

The fix for him is to either remove the wrong dir from his path
altogether, or to re-arrange his path so that the Windows directory
comes before the non-existent one (TDL looks in each directory
in the path for the appropriate note application - in this case
WRITE.EXE - and stops at the first directory in which it finds it).

It worked! I have been busier than a one-armed paper-hanger around
here, which explains why I haven't seen this before now. As for the
work-around, it seems to have worked. I didn't have any invalid
directories in my path, but I did put the Windows directory in it as
the first entry, which seems to have worked. Thanks to you and to
    Keith!
