54.0. "FT Function" by CINEMX::TIBBITS (VICTORIA TIBBIT DTN 137955) Wed Oct 12 1988 16:46

I've just used the FT function for the first time and had a few
problems. First off, the example for defining a full file spec
should read 'Node::Disk:[dir]file.ext'. The example given omits
the 'Disk' portion. I found it impossible to send the file to my
    home account without it.

Second, after I had unsuccessfully tried to transfer a file, I
immediately tried again and was put back to the UTL menu.
I tried a third time and everything worked ok.

    Any Thoughts?

	 Vicki,

In writing the File Transfer function, I was making some
	 assumptions:
	        1) You have a proxy account on your home node.
		2) If not, you are using the DECNET area.
		3) Your system manager doesn't allow an area to be
		      set 'World:write'

I am assuming that your system doesn't have the DECNET
area, which makes it more secure. No matter what example I
give, many people who follow it to the letter will get a
problem of some sort, since no three nodes are set up alike.

As to the above, I would need more information to find out
exactly what happened in your first two tries. I wouldn't
doubt that there could be problems in this function, as I
wrote it as a make-shift short term solution (aren't they
all?) and will be replacing it with a more robust process.

Please provide any information you can.

	 thanks.

As I ran into the same problem I will try to describe it. I believe you get
sent back to the UTL menu if you have cycled through all the possible files you
could choose to transfer. It doesn't allow you to choose a file to transfer if
you get an error and the error was from an attemp to send the last file (based
on alphabetical order). It just puts you back to the UTL memu. Sounds like the
program isn't cycling properly when it reaches the end of the list. Once you
re-enter the FT option, the files are all available for selection once again.

54.4Update on 54.0CINEMX::TIBBITSVictoria Tibbits 266-4512Thu Oct 20 1988 10:1011
Thanks, Ken, for the quick response and thanks, Steve, for explaining
    the problem more clearly.

Ken, I tried the file transfer again and it worked without specifying
the disk. As a matter of fact, I tried specifying just the node
(BTO) and it worked correctly. I'm not clear why I had troubles
the first time, but everything seems to be working well now.

    Regards,
    Vicki
