Retrieving Part Data for TPAS using AMP2 or PPCS
------------------------------------------------
As part of the Transfer Pricing Administration System (TPAS) implementation,
the TPAS sites must install the APPIX Master Part Satellite 2 System (AMP2).
AMP2 is one of the methods used to retrieve part data in the TPAS System.
If you want to try client server technology, you can also register for
APPIX Part and Product Client Server (PPCS). Then you could use PPCS
to retrieve part data in the TPAS Logic Program and use AMP2 as a contingency
plan, if there are network problems.
Once you register for PPCS software, you can use it in any of your locally
developed applications to retrieve Digital part and product information
via a CALL statement. PPCS has an easy to use Application Programming
Interface and is accessible by all high-level languages that comply with
the VAX Procedure Calling Standard. It can be used to request the following
data for a particular part :
o Detailed part information
o Cost Component data
o Available Bill of Material (BOM) IDs
o Detailed BOM information
o A BOM explosion
Each site must set a system logical which tells the TPAS Logic Program
whether to retrieve the required part data from either the local AMP2
Satellite File or from the APPIX Master Part File using PPCS.
Registering for AMP2 and PPCS
-----------------------------
If you are not currently using the AMP2 at your site, you need to register
for this EWIS product and install it. In order to register for the AMP2 or
PPCS product, complete the attached EWIS Registration Form and return it to
AWARD::BIGWOOD. After your registration form is processed, the EWIS
Customer Service Group will send you confirmation of your registration and
copies of the files needed to install AMP2. If you also register for PPCS,
you will receive the PPCS Installation Kit.
The charge listed on the registration form for AMP2 is done as a high level
hand off and is not billed directly to your cost center.
AMP2 and PPCS Installation Procedures
-------------------------------------
The AMP2 installation instructions are in Chapter 2 of the AMP2 User Manual.
The PPCS installation instructions are in Chapter 3 of the PPCS Reference
Manual.
Use the following commands to copy the appropriate user manual to your area :
$ COPY ACADMY::EWIS_DOC:AMP2_USER_GUIDE.PS *.* (681 BLOCKS)
$ COPY ACADMY::EWIS_DOC:APPIX$PPCS_REFERENCE_MANUAL.PS *.* (780 BLOCKS)
Since the files are in postscript format, a postscript printer is needed
to print them.
PPCS takes 5 minutes to install. Before you can install PPCS you must have
the following on your system :
o VMS V5.3 (minimum)
o VAX C V3.1 (minimum)
AMP2 Diskspace Requirements
---------------------------
New AMP2 customers receive the AMP2 software files, as well as an initial
Mass Load of approximately 30 files of 15,000 blocks each of part data.
These data files are then processed by the AMP2 software to build the
AMP2 Satellite File. Thus the disk space requirements for AMP2 are
as follows :
o Initially need 800,000 blocks to receive and process the
Mass Load
o Thereafter 350,000 blocks or less are needed to maintain
the Satellite File, after deleting the Mass Load files
o Need 2,000 blocks or less to receive daily AMP2 transaction
file of part adds/changes
The disk space requirements for PPCS are as follows :
o 2,500 blocks of free disk space during the installation
o 500 blocks of free disk space after installation

APPIX TRAINING IS NOW AVAILABLE!
Enterprise Wide Information Services (EWIS) is offering a one day
training class for APPIX users. The training is free and is held
at the Maynard facility, MSO1.
The APPIX training class is a one day hands-on workshop for users
that are interested in building or strengthening their understanding
of the APPIX Inquiry functions and the information available. The
course features graphic presentations, demonstrations of the inquiry
menu functions and lab exercises.
Classes have been scheduled through April and all dates and times
are listed in COURSES on the ACADMY cluster.
To register and view scheduled training dates:

If you have registered for an inquiry account, we will then send you an APPIX
password and user manual.
Please be aware that your APPIX account is for your exclusive use, and
your ACADMY password is confidential. Corporate Security guidelines clearly
prohibit "sharing" any VAX account.

ACCOUNT OWNERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
1) Never use easily guessable passwords such as family members, pets,
hobbies, projects, etc.
2) Your passwords should not be shared with anyone.
3) Passwords should never be transmitted over the network.
4) Users with accounts on multiple systems should ensure that their
password for each account is unique.
5) When logging in, do not let anyone observe you entering your
password.
6) Report any login failure messages you receive that you know you
did not generate. These messages will come up when you enter your
account. Also, be sure to read last login messages. If you feel a
security violation has been committed, please call your system
manager.
7) Do not give dial up access numbers to anybody internal or external
to DIGITAL. If you need dial up numbers for your own use, contact
IM Technical Support HOTLINE @5-3999.
8) Never leave your terminal logged on when absent from your office.
9) I have, or will, read Personnel Policies and Procedures 6.06
(Confidentiality), 6.24, 6.54 and 8.03.
10) Accessing any account or area without permission is subject to
disciplinary action.
11) If there are no logins to the account for 60 consecutive days at
any time, the account will be disusered. If there is no attempt
to have the account re-established after an additional 30 days,
the account will be removed.

Why does the first line say that all sites MUST install AMP2, if there
is a choice between this and PPCS?

| Alan,
Good point. Sites do not have to install AMP2. The site can use either AMP2
datafile locally or the APPIX database via client/server. The site will have
this option. Although, we are writting the code with a fail over for the
client/server, this will be to use the local AMP2 file IF available.
The choice of which to use will be up to each site implementation team.

Rinus,
What you are experiening with the link is due to the APPIX$MESSAGE.OBJ
The message file was incomplete. This was fixed and a new saveset
put out. I will be releasing another saveset to address some other
issues brought up in note 18. I will announce when complete.
Sorry for the inconvenience - all these issues will be straighted out
once alpha/beta test is complete.
