4.0. "VAX Notes - Overview" by AWARD::MAGNI (EWIS - APPIX/FMAP in MSO2) Wed Jul 01 1992 10:33
The purpose of this note is to provide information to everyone on
how/where to get training on using the VAX Notes utility. Though the
first item below on accessing VAX Notes may not apply since this is
posted in a Notes conference, it is included for completeness and so
it can be shared with those completely new to VAX Notes.
Accessing the VAX Notes utility
-------------------------------
To access the notes utility enter Notes at the DCL command level.
When you enter the notes utility, the prompt will become "NOTES>"
instead of "$". In NOTES, the HELP command can be used to display
the NOTES commands. "HELP", works the same way that it did at the
DCL command level, but the information displayed is different.
VAX Notes Conference
--------------------
A VAX Notes Conference for the purpose of helping people new to VAX
Notes exists at OASS::VAXNOTES_INTRO (as of 4/28/92). This conference
provides very detailed information on just about every aspect of using
the VAX Notes Utility. Often the node on which a conference resides
changes for one reason or another. To get the most up-to-date information,
copy the master file of the easynotes.lis file, which is located on Anchor,
to your directory.
ex:
$ COPY/LOG ANCHOR""::NET$LIBRARY:EASYNOTES.LIS *
Then edit the easynotes.lis file and search for the topic of your choice.
You will need to copy down the entire file specification provided in
order to successfully add the conference to your notebook.
To add this conference in your notebook complete the following steps
in order:
1) Log into a VAX/VMS system account with access to the $
prompt (referred to as having "DCL access") or, alternatively,
to a system which offers NOTES as a menu option. If you do
the latter, skip #2.
2) Invoke the NOTES utility by entering NOTES at the
DCL command level.
ex: $ NOTES
3) At the notes prompt ( NOTES> ), enter the following command:
ADD ENTRY OASS::VAXNOTES_INTRO
ex: NOTES> ADD ENTRY OASS::VAXNOTES_INTRO
4) At the notes prompt enter the following command:
OPEN VAXNOTES_INTRO
ex: NOTES> OPEN VAXNOTES_INTRO
(NOTE: when using the OPEN command, the entire conference name
need not be specified, but only those initial characters
that make the conference name unique relative to the other
conferences you have)
5) To read a note, enter the topic # and the reply number.
ex: 1.1
To see a listing of the replies for a certain topic, enter the
command DIR followed by the topic number, period, and asterisk:
ex: NOTES> DIR 3.*
A directory listing of all the replies that are listed under
topic 3 will be displayed.
To select a certain note under a specific topic, enter
the topic number, period, and the number listed under the
reply column that corresponds with the reply topic listed
under the title column that you want to read:
ex: NOTES> 3.4
While reading a reply like say, 3.4, you may decide to read
the replies that follow it or precede it. Rather than
specifying the topic and reply number for each reply you
wish to read, use KEYPAD 3 to view the next reply or KEYPAD 1
to view the previous reply.
VAX Notes Documentation
-----------------------
* VAX Notes documentation is available on-line and may be found at:
CLT::NOTES$DOCS:
To copy the documentation to your directory enter the following command:
$ COPY/LOG CLT::NOTES$DOCS: *
GUIDE_TO_NOTES (.LNO, .LN3, .LPR) Guide to VAX Notes (AI-G98HA-TE)
To print the LN01 (.LNO) and LN03 versions (.LN3), you should use the
/PASSALL/NOFEED qualifiers with the DCL PRINT command to insure
proper printing.
ex:
$ PRINT/QUEUE=?/PASSALL/NOFEED NOTES$DOCS
