IET11 TURBOchannel IEEE488 Converter
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
High-Performance TURBOchannel I/O Connection With IEEE488 Bus For Realtime
Computing
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The IET11 provides IEEE488 bus capabilities for the DECstation 5000 family of
workstations. It connects the instruments and measuring devices, communicating
via the IEEE488 bus to the TURBOchannel, Digital's integral I/O interconnect
for workstations.
The IET11 is a high-performance TURBOchannel IEEE488 converter which allows
standardized, bi-directional communications between the TURBOchannel inter-
connect and the widely used IEEE488 bus, also known as the GPIB or IEC bus.
It features all major IEEE488 interface functions specified in the IEEE 488.1
and 488.2 standards, and provides enhanced DMA transfer capability with data
transfer rates of 1 Mbyte/second for both read and write operations.
A DECstation 5000 workstation equipped with the IET11 is well suited for
instrument control applications where low-cost and high-performance require-
ments are important selection criteria. These applications can be found in
research and development laboratories, service laboratories, research
institutions, education, and government. Applications include data acquisition
systems, automated test equipment, and numerous graphic applications including
digitizing analog video signals for CAD/CAM, high-speed laser printers, and
color scanners.
Features:
o Provides IEEE488 capability to DECstation 5000 series workstations
o Low-cost, high-performance IEEE488 bus converter that sustains data transfer
rates of 1 Mbyte/sec.
o Compliance with all revisions of the IEEE488 standard, including
IEEE488.2-1987, and "Standard Commands for Programmable Instrumentation"
o Compatibility with TURBOchannel I/O architecture
o ULTRIX-based software driver including diagnostic software
o Supported by "DEC Realtime Integrator" software

IET11 Overview
The IET11 is a combination hardware/software solution that includes the
TURBOchannel IEEE488 Bus Converter, ULTRIX-based device driver, and documen-
tation. The software consists of a loadable, multitasking device driver and
programs, which allow a DECstation 5000 workstation to act as an IEEE488
controller with complete communication and management capabilities. In
addition, the device driver is LIO-compliant; i.e. the IET11 is supported by
the latest version of Digital's Realtime Test Integrator software platform.
The software runs under ULTRIX, version 4.2 and compatibility will be
maintained with future ULTRIX releases.
The IET11 provides full IEEE488 interface functionality including, controller,
talker and extended talker, listener and extended listener, service request,
parallel poll, etc. It features high-speed data transfer with a sustainable
data transfer rate capability of 1 Mbyte/second for both read and write
operations.
The IET11 hardware, a PC board which can be installed in any single-width
TURBOchannel interconnect slot supports up to 14 IEEE488 instruments or
devices. The use of application-specific circuits (ASIC's) means that the
IET11 provides the highest obtainable performance specified by the IEEE488
standard. In order to achieve this performance and functionality, the IET11
provides enhanced DMA capabilities, FIFO buffers for decoupling IEEE488
transfers from TURBOchannel interconnect transfers, and a byte-to-longword
(32-bit) packing/unpacking feature implemented by hardware.
The IET11 is designed to be installed by the user and is fully supported by
Digital Services on a worldwide basis.
Digital's software platform "DEC Realtime Test Integrator for ULTRIX fully
supports the IET11. This product is an icon-based, graphical programming
environment that allows for the development of realtime applications without
programming.
