137.0. "NEW: KAV30 boots from DECnet/OSI now..." by EICMFG::KAV30_SUPP () Fri Aug 19 1994 12:34

    Due to growing customer demand the KAV30 boot EPROM will be modified
    and now contains the ability to boot from DECnet/OSI with MOP V4 proto-
    col. All new shipped KAV30's from mid September on will have the new
    EPROM, revision of these boards will be C02.

    Old boards coming in for repair will be upgraded with the new EPROM and
    have the revision A07 and B05 respectively.

    Note, that the new EPROM is fully backword compatible, it supports both MOP
    V3 and V4 and therefore will still boot from DECnet phase IV nodes.

    Customers may upgrade their boards onsite by exchanging the EPROM's,
    EPROM's can be purchased through the product manager, Roland Svennberg,
    EICMFG::SVENNBERG, DTN 873-4126.

    The new code is under test right now and will be released by end of
    this month. If your customer has urgent needs or wants to exchange a
    bigger volume of EPROM's, please contact us or the product manager
    immediately.

    Replies to this note will contain specifics of the implementation as
    well as the anouncement of the availability of the final EPROM's.

137.1Help needed....!!!!BLGSUP::BONORATue Aug 30 1994 17:1712
Hi' guys

I'm looking for info about the KAV30 Eprom for booting via MOP V4 (DECNET/OSI)
Trying to send a mail to the KAV30's Product Manager (as explained in
EICMFG::KAV30 note #137) I receive the following message:
MAIL> send
To:     EICMFG::SVENNBERG
%MAIL-E-NOSUCHUSR, no such user SVENNBERG at node CSSEC1

It is very urgent....
Can someone help me ?

    Try sending mail to EICMFG::RSVENNBERG

    	Julian.

    PS. I am currently writing those EPROMs. It will be another one or two
    weeks until you can get them.

                                      CHAPTER 2

                         NEW BOOT OPTION FOR KAV30 REV. C02

                                        NOTE
             This section describes the possibility to boot from DEC-
             net/OSI using MOP V4 protocol and the user interaction
             required to do this. If you do not intend to boot from
             DECnet/OSI you do not need to read this section nor do you
             need to modify any of the default settings on the KAV30.

          The Kav30 has now the ability to boot from DECnet/OSI using MOP
          V4 protocol. This enhancement is backward compatible, that is,
          a KAV30 with the modified EPROM will still boot using MOP V3 if
          required.

                                        NOTE

             To invoke the new boot sequence you always have to boot
             from 'PRB1', even if you don't have a SCSI device. The
             boot from 'EZA0' (default) will always use MOP V3 and
             therefore fail if the boot-server is a DECnet/OSI host.

          In order to speed-up boot time, a new utility has been added to
          the diagnostics. This utility allows the setting of a preferred
          boot option; the following figure shows the new 'help-screen':

             >>>START 2008005C

              KAV30 Utilities, (ROM version 5.5):
                ^x2008'0040: run selftest continously.
                ^x2008'0044: set/show full memory test flag.
                ^x2008'0048: set battery backed-up clock date/time.
                ^x2008'004C: show battery backed-up clock date/time.
                ^x2008'0050: set/show SCSI IDs on the SCSI bus.
                ^x2008'0054: test the VME/VSB buses.
                ^x2008'0058: "help" for the previous utility.
                ^x2008'005C: prints this list of utilities & addresses.
                ^x2008'0060: set/show boot options.
              end of list.

					New boot option for KAV30 rev. C02 3

          If you invoke the new utility, the diagnostics will prompt you
          with the following screen:

          >>>START 200800060

           KAV30 ROM utility to set/show the boot options.
             NOTES:
               To boot the KAV30 from MOP V4 you must use the KAV30 boot ROMs
               You can set the following behaviour options for booting of PRB1

               0: This option is the same then nothing set and tries SCSI boot
		  only (backward compatibility)
               1: This option will try SCSI boot and after that Ethernet boot
		  with MOP V3 and then MOP V4 protocol
               2: This option will try Ethernet boot only with
                  MOP V3 and then MOP V4 protocol

             Currently Option 2 is in effect.
             Option: (0,1,2,<cr>)[cr = Option 2]: 0
           New option is now set.
           Utility finished.

          ?06 HLT INST
              PC = 20087EB2
          >>>

          If you want to boot from ethernet with MOP V4 protocol by de-
          fault, you have to do the following:

          o Invoke the boot option utility: >>>START 200800060

          o  Set option: 2

          o Set the 'Boot Source Switches' on the KAV30 from 'EZA0' (see
             table 2-3 in the KAV30 "Hardware Installation and User's
             Information" manual) to 'PRB1'.

          After that any consecutive boot attempt (even after a power down
          cycle) will use ethernet and MOP V3/V4 protocol.

          The default value for the boot option is 0, therefore no attempt
          will be made to boot from ethernet using MOP V4 protocol. This
          is the default behaviour of all KAV30's regardless of their
          revision status.

137.5Some additional release notesEICMFG::KAV30_SUPPWed Sep 14 1994 15:3315
    The new EPROMS have been tested on:

    OpenVMS/VAX DECnet Phase IV/DECnet Phase V
    OpenVMS/Alpha DECnet Phase V
    OSF/1 V1.3 DECnet/OSI V1.1

    We have discovered a problem with OSF/1 V2.0 and DECnet/OSI V2.00 and
    V2.01. The KAV30 will either not boot at all or execute a HLT shortly
    after the boot command is entered. This has been traced down to be a
    DECnet/OSI V2.00 problem. To fix this you can install the DECnet/OSI
    V1.1 mop deamon on OSF/1 V2.0. This workaround has been tested and
    works. We have also manufactured a small tar file with an installation
    description which can be copied by contacting Jan (EICMFG::) Holzer.
