128.0. "Discrepency in KAV30 variant part numbers (entered on behalf of Dave Savini)" by ZYDECO::BODA (Realtime Expertise Center) Mon Jun 06 1994 19:39

This is being entered on behalf of Dave Savini who would like an official
response to what the correct part numbers are. /atb

 Alan,

I spoke with a Walter Oelkers at JYC. (Phone: 214-242-6512).

They ordered the KAV30-AB with their system configuration, with the
 expectation of a non-scsi 16MG board.

On the physical board itself, on the connector, it states both
 the T6010-BA and KAV30-AB.

When they showed memory, it came up 4MB vs. the 16MB expected, and
 the device was SCSI.

I have attached the two appix descriptions of the KAV30-AB and AC.
Which conflicts the description of the "Hardware Installation and User's
Information" manual.

                The Manual States Appix States

 KAV30-AB T6010-AB 16MB non SCSI 4MB With SCSI
 KAV30-AC T6010-AC 4MB With SCSI 16MB non SCSI

The concern is providing JYC a KAV30-AB which should be a 16MB non
SCSI board. With the problem presented, it is evident I will have to go
through inventory in NIO to have the board plugged into a system, and
show the memory capacity. Once this is completed, I can exchange the
inventory with JYC. Currently JYC is requesting via sales an MRR
(Material Replacement Requirement) which will do the exchange.

Problem: It could be the boards are mislabled from the source. (needs
            to be inquired with Munich)

The description between Appix and the H/W Users installation
            manual needs retification.

If you could please post this in the KAV30 Notes conference for me I
would appreciate it.

 Thanks and regards,

 Dave

    Officially correct PNs are:

    KAV30-AA 4MB NO SCSI
    KAV30-AB 4MB WITH SCSI
    KAV30-AC 16MB NO SCSI
    KAV30-AD 16MB WITH SCSI

I have no clue as to why your PNs are wrong, but they are obviously
    really screwed up.

    	Julian.

PS. Could this be a USA only problem :-)

Thanks Julian. I'll forward this to Dave.

The VTX PRICE listings confirm the part numbers you give.
I suspect it is an error in the new Hardware Installation and User's Guide.
The old version (July 1991) of this doc which i have doesn't even have
these part numbers listed as Dave's new version does.

Alan
128.3your right... sorry...EICMFG::KAV30_SUPPTue Jun 07 1994 21:0212
    Hi Allan and Dave,

the APPIX numbers are correct, this is a 'bug' in the latest revision
of the "Hardware Installation and User's Guide".... we are sorry...

A new entry will describe the problem and the HW release notes (which
come with every KAV30) will show the correction. We will not update the
"Hardware Installation and User's Guide", since this would be too
    expensive for this little problem...

Hey Julian, The tingy is still here, it will haunt you forever!

On the problem with the descriptions, this is what caused a screw up, the
customer ordered the KAV30-AC (16MB no/SCSI) correctly in the first place.
It was the KAV30 Hardware Instl. manual they open when the got the board
from DEC which flagged them they had ordered the wrong variation. Which states
in the manual a KAV30-AC as a 4MB w/SCSI. So now I have the wonderful task of
ECO'ing a custom number to reincorporate the correct variation. I just assumed
the customer knew what he wanted, but when I found out he read the KAV30 manual,
I could have told them to ignore this piece of doc.

 Dave
128.5we apologize...EICMFG::KAV30_SUPPWed Jun 08 1994 13:1012
    Hi Dave,

we are very sorry for the trouble you have with this number...

The problem started when we incorporated the stuff out of the HW
rel.notes into the HW users guide and the writer 'mangled' the
description next to the partnumber... Nevertheless, neither Julian nor
I or anybody else did find this error, so it's our fault. We'll buy
you a beer (or two...) next time you're in Munich (or we are in
    Boston...), OK?

    Thomas & Julian
