I received the following from a customer: We have a removable SCSI drive attached to a KAV30 in a product that we are developing. The removable drive is used to supply data to the product. Nevertheless, if there isn't a cartridge in the removable drive when the product is turned on, the KAV30 never seems to acknowledge that the drive exists. I understand that the KAV30 probably does not receive any SCSI packets from the drive if the cartridge is not plugged in. Therefore, I have tried to poll on the disk drive every 30 seconds by trying to open it with fopen. Even if a cartridge is placed in the drive later, the KAV30 never seems to acknowledge that it exists. If the cartridge was plugged into the removable drive when the product was turned on, even if the cartridge is removed later and accessed when the drive is temporarily unavailable, this does not prevent the drive from being accessed later when a cartridge is plugged in again. It seems as if the SCSI driver for the KAV30 senses the drives that exist upon power up and is not able to acknowledge a new drive after startup. Is this basically true? Can I do something to cause the KAV30 processor to acknowledge the removable drive if a cartridge was not plugged in upon power up? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Sumithra

126.1 | not supported... | EICMFG::KAV30_SUPP | Fri May 20 1994 11:11 | 10
Hi Sumithra, the KAV30 SCSI port driver does not support removable media... If your customer desperately needs it, we could offer to modify the driver on a project basis. best regards, Thomas

Thanks, Thomas. I will check with the customer. Sumithra
126.3 | Check out the SCSI Sniffer program | SOLVIT::YAHUDI::CUSHNIE | Fri May 20 1994 22:38 | 17
Hi Sumithra, If I remember correctly, the VAXELN SCSI Driver uses a SCSI 'Sniffer' program to determine what devices are on the SCSI bus. This 'Sniffer' is run at VAXELN initialisation by default, but there is no reason why it cannot why this program cannot be run again, once the system is initialised. With a bit of luck and imagination you should be able to reconfigure the SCSI bus periodically from your application. Hope this helps Regards John Cushnie@PCS |
