71.0. "Battery related Questions" by UNITED::NEWELLG (On the 6th day God created Manchester) Fri Nov 13 1992 13:35

All,

My customer is planing to have KAV30s on the shelf for a lonnnnnnggg time as
spares.

How long will the battery last ( guess) ?
Should we recommend cycling spares & live ?
What would be recommended cycle time ?

If the battery is dead what is the effect on KAV30 & ELN (particularly on
startup)?

Note that it will not be possible for any operator interaction with ELN.

Cheers,

	GeGeoff

    Hi Geoff,

The KAV30 uses an on-board re-chargeable battery (which is not customer
replacable). KAV30s are shipped with a fully charged battery which is
protected by a jumper to prevent discharge during shipping and storage
(part of the installation procedure is to jumper the auxiliary power
source (battery or external standby supply)).

If the battery is dead, the KAV30 self-test detects this failure (you
can configure the KAV30 to ignore errors during self-test). With
regards to VAXELN, a message will be displayed on the console (if one
is connected) during system initialization if the battery is dead, if
you are setting the VAX system time from the real-time clock during
system startup, this will fail if the battery is dead. If your
application uses battery-backed up RAM then its contents might be
corrupted if the battery is dead. The state of the battery can be
checked at run-time using the KAV$CHECK_BATTERY routine.

    Regards,

71.2Shelf life of battery ?UNITED::NEWELLGOn the 6th day God created ManchesterMon Nov 16 1992 19:2113
Graham,

Thanks so far...

Where could I get figures for battery life (with jumper installed for storage) ?

we are talking 10 years or so here.

Could we get TOY over the net and totally disregard the battery ?
Will the KAV30 boot ok with a dead battery, but perform all other self tests ?

    Hi all,

may I go in here and give some clarifications:

    1) if the battery has to supply current to the NVram etc. (jumper
installed) the lifetime will be 20 to 100 days (theoretically).
    Practice
has shown that the typical lifetime is about 80 days.

    2) The possibility to configure the KAV30 to go over any selftest
error (battery dead is such an error) has gone away on all KAV30s rev
Bxx (this is the current shipping version).
