23.0. "Boot sequence" by MLNCSC::BELLENCHIA (R. Bellenchia - ACT Italy (Graphics/ Realtime support)) Mon Sep 02 1991 12:06

Is there a way to enable a boot sequence ? I mean, after power-on and console
diagnostic self-test, the system tries to boot from a SCSI or first device on
sequence and whether that fails, system will try with next (this behaviour is
performed by many VAX, VAXStation systems).

With DIP switches I can set undefined boot source. Does that mean "enable the
sequence" ? Sorry, I can't try. I haven't a KAV30 on my office and I've
to answer a question raised from field test customer.

Thanks in advance for an answer.

Roberto

23.1No, the rtVAX can't.BAYERN::WOLFFConformism is for little minds.Mon Sep 02 1991 13:4617
You can't set any boot sequence, so the answer is 'No'. Besides you have to
realize that this has nothing to do with the KAV30 as such, it's the rtVAX300
on the KAV30 which has that restriction. Think about it, how would you design
a processor or uProcessor chip like the rtVAX300 from which you don't know
where it's going to be used, or built in - so the answer must be 'No'. All
other VAXes (like you mentioned) have that sequence because the CVAX processor
is built into a machine and thus one know what devices are in there, so the boot
sequence is in the boot ROMs

Now, there might be in the future a new EPROM version on the KAV30 which allows
to simulate things like that, but this is not planned yet. However even that
won't be what your asking for, because the processor will then boot from EPROM
which then will execute some software to simulate what you're asking for.

What kind of sequence did you have in mind?

23.2KAV30 with SCSI optionMLNCSC::BELLENCHIAR. Bellenchia - ACT Italy (Graphics/ Realtime support)Mon Sep 02 1991 14:4415
Thanks for quickly answer.

When the KAV30 is sold with SCSI controller a possible sequence could be
PRB1 and follow ethernet.

I'm agree but when you sell KAV30 you know the environment (SCSI or not,
ethernet, serial down-line loading) so I think that a boot sequence simulation
using EPROM program should be implemented and selected using DIP switch option.
