17.0. "Disk support" by NOT001::WIDDOWSON () Wed Jun 26 1991 12:41

On the KAV30 systems that have the SCSI connections, are the full range of
our SCSI disks supported?

Hi Kelvin,

The KAV30 only supports the Digital SCSI disks that are listed as being
supported by VAXELN 4.2. The SCSI drives supported by the KAV30 are:

                 o  RZ22

                 o  RZ23

                 o  RZ23L

                 o  RZ55

                 o  RZ56

                 o  RRD40 CDROM

                 o  RX23

              Digtial recommends that only devices from the above list
              be used. The use of any other device is not recommended or
              supported by Digital.

The above information can also be found in the
VAXELN KAV TOOLKIT EXTENSIONS FOR VMS V1.0 release notes.

17.2Rack mounting?MIACT::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbpThu Aug 29 1991 16:1618
    What about rackmounting?

    I have an enquiry from a customer who wants a transportable
    rack-mounted setup with local hard disk and floppy. They want a
    standalone ELN environment with substantial local read/write storage,
    preferably all in 1 Eurocard (or whatever) rack. Is there a reasonable
    way of doing this with existing options? The likely sales volume is low
    so custom EIC solutions may not help.

    I believe there are rackmount kits for some of our 3100 series systems,
    although I can't find any details now... Are there rackmount kits for
    the equivalent SCSI expansion boxes? This wouldn't be ideal (total
    overkill) but might at least give them a supported solution.

    Alternatively is there somewhere else I should ask?

    regards
    john
17.3BAYERN::WOLFFConformism is for little minds.Thu Aug 29 1991 17:1211
Well if you want to use the KAV30 you must have some VME connectors in some
sort of enclosure to supply it with power. Then you would need some Disks which
could be plugged into this VME connector - those disk do not exists (yet)
from Digital, so I can't see how you would get those options, since any disk
not supplied by Digital is not supported by VAXELN.

How about an entirly differen processor, or rack-mount processor, EIC Munich
offeres (I hope I am right) a rack mount VAX6000 with some local storage,
how about that?

17.4Support is optional in this caseMIACT::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbpFri Aug 30 1991 20:0631
    Thanks Julian.

    Neither the rackmount 6000 nor the smaller cheaper rackmount 4000 are
    appropriate here. The whole system needs to be movable without lifting
    gear. So a VAX in a BA23 box just *might* do it, e.g. an RTVAX3200.
    Anything bigger won't meet the spec. Anyway none of these have a
    VMEbus for the customer's home-made VMEbus I/O.

    This particular customer knows DEC kit better than most DECies. They
    buy DEC kit, typically from distributors, and add specialist third
    party stuff - ruggedised tapes, disks, special-purpose I/O. It's for
    their own use not for resale so it's fairly low volume. Because of the
    amount of obscure third party stuff it usually ends up on self
    maintenance. So "support" is not really an issue - though this is not
    an approach I would generally recommend!

    If they can buy something from DEC at a reasonable price that does the
    job, they will - they like the KAV30/ELN concept, having already used
    Qbus RTVAXes. But if the only DEC content is a KAV30 and the goodness
    of using ELN software, there's a risk the whole business may go to a
    VME vendor of their choice.

    Are we really providing an RTVAX on VME with a SCSI controller and
    nothing useful to connect it to, either of our own or by referral?
    (Then why all the fuss about the "DEC's Open Advantage"? :-) The
    Infoserver people are willing to qualify 3rd party SCSI I/O. The IEZ11
    is a qualified third party SCSI-GPIB adapter. Are there any plans for
    the VME/realtime market segment?

    regards

17.5MIACT::WALLACEjohn wallace @ bbpWed Sep 11 1991 16:099
    If we don't have a SCSI for VME offering and no apparent plans for one,
    is there any interest in qualifying the integrated disk systems
    available from VME rack suppliers like BICC/Vero and Schroff - you buy
    a VME rack and it comes with a drive already in it.

    Please?

    regards

    Hi John,

    It's really a question of support, A number of vendors have "packaged"
    Digital SCSI drives for VMEbus.

    I'm not sure what the "official" position is on the support of these
    drives.

John,

	I do have the first RX23 integrated in a VME enclosure by a company
	called PEP Modular Computers. They are also in UK. The contact is

	Peter Blewett, phone (0273) 771-297

	They have been in contact with people from Digital before and know
	about the enclosure they built for us (Graham McKenzie @BBP) owns
	one of them.

	Another company working on such solutions are IRTV in Germany.

	Contact Mr. Hueller, (0049) 40- 2980140

	I requested from them a RZ35 integration, but did not get a firm
	response yet. They are working with non-digital disks.

Regards,

	Wolfgang
