153.0. "Problems when answering or sending receipts" by YUPPY::CARTER (Windows on the world...) Thu Nov 05 1992 17:52

  Hi

I have jsut installed MRMEMO here in the UK. The DEC user agent is DEC
    Mailworks (ALL-IN-1 Mail Server V1.1-C)

It seems to be OK when sending to memo or back, but if I send a receipt
notification or reply to a mail send from memo they just sit in the
    MEMO mailbox in MRMAN.

I have logged a few of the things I thought might be relevant... cn
anyone see what is the problem. One of the error messages is Virtual
memory errors- but the system has loads of gblpages, sections, virtual
    pages etc

    any ideas?

    Xtine

PS> I aplogise for the lenght of the logging attached - but I thought
it better to include anything that might be relevant

153.1NBS file dumps? Use address translation only?STKOFF::SPERSSONPas de problemeThu Nov 05 1992 19:0542

    Hi Xtine,

First of all the virtual memory error is a consequence of MRMEMO
looping on error. MRMEMO has the habit of restarting when a serious
error occurs, and then it attempts to process the message again, after
which the same error happens etc.

The significant error message here is:

%MRIF-E-INVALIDMSG, file does not contain specified message part

The error seems to occur when MRMEMO tries to issue a notification
message (probably non-delivery). MRMEMO attempts to append the original
message contents file to the Non-delivery notification, and apparently
MRIF thinks something is wrong with the specified file.

I'll see if I can reproduce the error, meanwhile can you post
MRNBSDMP dump listings (or better still if you have them in binary
    form) of these files:

      MRMEMO$DIR:MRMEMO1-contents.nbs
      MRMEMO$DIR:MRMEMO1-envelope.nbs

I see that you use DDS validation in all directions. Do you really
want this? Address translation (which you also have enabled) is usually
sufficient. This will give you DDS lookups for outbound (MR -> MEMO)
MAILBUS senders and inbound (MEMO -> MR) MAILBUS recipients. Also it
will give you the neat feature that the message will be sent *even
though* the lookup fails, which is really useful (ask the people in
this conference). DDS validation however will override this feature.

The reason for the non-delivery is probably that the DDS
validation lookup (sender or receiver) fails. I can't explain why this
happens when you reply from ALL-IN-1 Mail. This will be clearer when
    I've viewed the NBS dumps.

    	cheers,

    		Stefan
153.2Error reproduced. Workaround: don't use DDS validationSTKOFF::SPERSSONPas de problemeThu Nov 05 1992 20:3417

    OK,

I've managed to reproduce the error, so you don't have to bother with
the dumps. The error happens when MRMEMO tries to lookup the recipient
of the Receipt Notification (ie DDS_VALIDATION=R=MEMO).

I'll see what it takes to provide a fix. In the meantime, take my
suggestion and use address translation only.

    disable DDS validation thus:

    MRMMAN> DEFINE/NODDS

    	cheers,

    		Stefan
153.3Patch and explanationSTKOFF::SPERSSONPas de problemeThu Nov 05 1992 23:4020

In order to not make MRMEMO crash on Receipt Notifications, a patch is
    available in 5.19

In order to make the reply function from ALL-IN-1 Mail work with DDS
validation for MEMO recipients, the DDS records *must* correspond to
the MEMO directory not only as far as MEMO address is concerned but
also for personal attributes such as ORGNAME. This is sort of
complicated. I guess there's time to suggest that you do an MRNBSDMP of
the MRMEMO$DIR:MRMEMO1-ENVELOPE again, and I cas use that dump as a
reference to how I think you should do.

Of course if you don't want to go through all this, you just have to
follow my suggestion of disabling DDS Validations :-)

    	cheers and good night

    		Stefan

153.4excellent service...!YUPPY::CARTERWindows on the world...Fri Nov 06 1992 15:0916
    Stefan

Thanks you VERY much for your help. For the moment I have disabled DDS
    validation.

I will try and dump the files you suggest and get them into Easynet for
    you.

I will also go and look at 5.19 for the patch.

I will be in touch soon

    Thanks again

    Xtine

I have dumped some NBS files..

The envelope and content are from a reply that I made to a MEMO user
the MR51 nbs file is one I copied when it was hung in MRMAN.

THe MR51 file was created before the fixes and patch.

I haven't seen any problems since setting NODDS

    Yes

I have switched of DDS and it all seems to be fine.

However, when receiving from MEMO it prompts me if I want to send a
receipt. I say YES (the default) but nothing appears at memo and the
    status isn't updated.

I have applied the patch, but I haven't yet updated DDS with the
orgname. I have done define/nodds and have started it again.

I will try with the orgname on Monday.

    Have a good weekend

    Regards

    Xtine

ps. I have full receipt notifictions and seem to get a delivery and
'read' receipt when I send to memo.

153.9ExplanationsSTKOFF::SPERSSONPas de problemeFri Nov 06 1992 18:4331

    Hi,

The dump in .8 (MR51) confirms what I said about Receipt Notifications
and DDS Validation. The patch will take care of this.

If you want the MEMO originator/recipient David Yarham to work both
ways in DDS Validation mode this is what you would have to put
    in the DDS record:

    Surname:	Yarham
    Given:	David
    Orgname:	ISG
    Profs Loc:	VAGUK
    Profs User:	YARHAMD
    MHS:
      Addr:	GOLF
      Mbx:	MEMO
      Userid: VAGUK.YARHAMD

The key here and what was missing from the example in .0 is the
ORGNAME. For outgoing senders The Orgname attribute is fetched from the
MEMO Sender attribute but *not* validated.

For outgoing message recipients MRMEMO unfortunately tries to
match *all* the address attributes with DDS, and if one is missing the
    lookup will fail.

Have I convinced to not use DDS Validation yet?

153.11Should work, works hereSTKOFF::SPERSSONPas de problemeFri Nov 06 1992 19:1619

What should happen is that the status of the message is updated to
"Selected By". Remember that it might take a few moments and that the
MEMO status is not updated dynaically on the screen (you have to press
    <ENTER>)

The DDS record is not involved here.

So unless the notification message is stuck in the queue I have no
    suggestions.

    	cheers,

    Hi

I have been trying this to no avail. The message is not stuck in the
queue - it goes through (seen by doing MC MRMAN, DUMP * continuously
while someone else says yes to notification) and dissapears into a
    black hole.

The status is not changed to Selected By... though I do know what you
mean - I have seen "Selected By" on memos sent to other MEMO users.

In case it lends some clue I made another LOGFILE and some .DMP files
from dumping the contents and envelope NBS files - attached in the next
    note...

    Any ideas?

    Still no luck.

There one more thing you can do:

    $ define/system mrmemo$logmask 20

(This will enable outgoing formatted message logging in
MRMEMO$DIR:MRMEMO1.LOG - you don't have to restart the server)

Then send a message from MEMO->AM and enable the receipt. The log should
look similar to the below. Please post the log here.

    cheers,

    	Stefan

153.19MEMO software versions?STKOFF::SPERSSONPas de problemeFri Nov 13 1992 18:0616

    Looks OK.

Next step is to check MEMO behaviour.

What versions of MEMO and MEMO/Gateway are they using?

MEMO V3.1 and MEMO/Gateway V1.0 is not a good combination. Also MEMO
V3.1.1 and V3.1.2 have been known to be shaky.

An old MEMO version (say 3.0) and a new MEMO/Gateway (V1.1) might also
be a dangerous combination. I don't know if anyone has tried that.

    cheers,

    	Stefan
