149.0. "MRMEMO falls asleep !" by EEMELI::ALADIN () Mon Sep 21 1992 11:51

    Hey, MEMO people !

Our customer VTKK told that they have recognized a problem in the
MRMEMO server. The server seems to go asleep sometimes, i.e. it
        doesn't
recognize incoming MR messages to be forwarded to MEMO.
When this occurs the queue of messages starts to grow but MRMEMO
does not seem to wake up. After this the mrmemo server becomes
also unavailable for incoming memo messages. No error logging
has been found. After they restart the MRMEMO server everything
        works fine again.

Any suggestions on what might be the problem or how to get
    	more info ?

        Hey Jan-Erik

PS. The Patch from previously (Note 139) seems to be working
now ! Thanks again for your help !

    Hello Jan-Erik!

.0> The server seems to go asleep sometimes

How often is "sometimes"? Does it happen completely randomly or
has the server always been running for some time before it "goes
    asleep"?

What does MRMMan> SHOW have to say about the server when it hangs?

Even if there is no message in the log file from the time of the hang,
are there any messages at all in the log file (indications of problems
    during the server lifetime)?

I have heard of a similar problem at another site where the server
would hang after some time (a couple of days or weeks). There was no
reason found for the hang there and they are now periodically
restarting MRMEMO to avoid the problem.

I have a hunch that the reason could be a memory (or some other resource)
leak that eventually exhausts the resource and causes the hang.

If your (VTKK's) server never hangs when it is recently started - only
when it has been running some time, you might have the same situation.
In that case, it would be interesting to know:

      - Approximately how many messages flows through the server per day?
      - How long time does the server run before it hangs?
      - What does DCL> SHOW PROCESS/QUOTAS/ACCOUNTING say about the server
process (MRMEMO Server n) when the server
	  a) Is recently started
	  b) Hangs

Have these problems started recently or has it always been a problem but
has not been reported until now? Maybe the server hasn't been able to
stay up long enough before to reach this state :-)

    Anders
