112.0. "MEMO challenges OfficeVision" by STKHLM::TENNANDER (Bjrn T, EIS Stockholm Sweden) Wed Jan 15 1992 11:36
I read this in the Notes from the UnderLan. Could be intresting and
may have something to do with the future of this product.

IBM'S OFFICEVISION IS UNDER FIRE IN BOTH HOST AND LAN MARKETS DUE
THE EXPECTED ACTION/VERIMATION PACT.
Verimation is expected to use the pact with Action to extend its
Memo host-based integrated office system into the LAN
environment. The firms plan to integrate Memo and Action's LAN-
based work-flow coordination technologies to furnish automatic
document routing. One of Verimation's key strategic weapons is
the potential for users to realize large cost savings.
Users were cautiously optimistic. IDC's Director of Office
Systems Research, Ann Palermo, said that intelligent forms
routing will become increasingly important as firms look for
applications beyond their LAN e-mail applications. IDC figures
indicate that the U.S. integrated office market and groupware
will grow from 1990's $41M to $320M in 1995.
Cost/performance is one of Memo's largest selling points over
IBM. A recent Gartner Group report indicated that running IBM's
Profs on a mainframe costs about $150 monthly, while Memo costs
between $6 and $10 monthly. Selecting Verimation's product could
save a firm with 1,000 e-mail users about $3.6M over three years.
Halliburton Co. selected Memo over IBM's OfficeVision, Profs, and
Disoss because of Memo's intelligent forms capability. Gartner
Group Program Director, Mike Anderson, said that host-based
office system vendors hope to capitalize on the user expectations
raised, but not fulfilled, by OfficeVision. IDC's Palermo said
that IBM is working on a more work-group-oriented version of
OfficeVision with Lotus. (CW,1/6/92,p4)
