43.1 | MEMO | STKHUV::PLARS | | Thu Aug 09 1990 16:30 | 23 |
| 1. MEMO is available om MVS and DOS and during 1990 for VM.
(the Gwy only under MVS and DOS)
2. They have Gwy to: PROFS, SNADS and spring 1991 X.400 (??). Wang and
HP also have build a Gwy like MR/MEMO but much simplier (API, LU6.2).
They also have a product called Memo/PC for DOS and OS/2 it's a
product like cardinal: user dialogue, host directory access, download
of new mail.....
3. MEMO is only a mailsystem but a very good one. It is very, very fast
with good support for notification, on-line directory and you can
see where you mail are and if people read you mail. It is today only
support for ASCII files...
This is the most important plans for the next version of MEMO 3.1 with
FCS September 1990:
o new user dialogue
o transparant document transport
o public distribution lists
o doc. size up to 500K
o enhancement to Memo/Calender
o adressing enhancements (X.400)
o support for Memo/PC v2.0

Let me, as a complement to Jan' reply, highlight a few MEMO weaknesses:
1) The "word processor" available within MEMO itself is (to quote a
major customer directly) atrocious! There may be a MEMO-PC application
but the fact remains that you cannot call a directly integrated
proper Word Processor as easily as, say WPSPLUS from ALL-IN-1.
2) X.400 is not available NOW! "Next year" is a term very liberally
used by Verimation representatives.
3) MEMO is a stand-alone Mail system. I don't know of any integration
or customization features.
4) Since the "word processor" is Text only there is no support for
graphics or any advanced format.
5) I'm sure there's more...

Thanks for your info. Some further questions :-
1. You mention about ASCII text only, can a user attach a binary
document like spreadsheet and send it out? If it cannot then its a
advantage to us!
2. For the word processor, that means that they can't change the
default editor? Not even on the PC?

If they just use plain MEMO they can't do any such thing. You bet it's
an advantage!

I know too little about MEMO-PC (or is that PC-MEMO?), I can only guess
that it's clever enough to have MEMO relay more or less any format from
the PC, and thus the PC user can possibly choose his WP flavour. Anyone
out there with PC-MEMO knowledge feel free to jump in on this.

throught internal mail, as there is no indication of who the sender is,
I would like to thank him/her here, appreciate the article very much!!

| My electronic mail that was to describe the paper mail did not reach
its destination since I didn't use the correct address.
I have now sent another (electronic) mail that I hope will reach you.
