22.0. "Position of Text on Perfect-Bound Spines" by TNPUBS::PHALEN () Fri Sep 08 1995 19:06
I have received questions about the correct order of information on the
spine of a perfect bound book and I am posting this note to answer
them. I am also sending copies of this note to delivery specialists
and artists.
In Digital Standard 073-0, Table 9 "Summary Cover Elements and
Specifications" lists the required and optional elements for tech doc covers
and it refers to "Figure 4, Layout for a Perfect-Bound 178 mm x 229 mm
(7 in x 9 in) Document" for detailed specs such as position, type
family, font size, and font weight.
Figure 4, referred to in Table 9, shows this order for text on the spine
of a perfect-bound book:
1. Document title
2. Product name
3. Logo
Please see "Digital Standard 073-0 Manufacturing and Packaging for
Publications" Revision E for full details. You can obtain a PostScript
file from VTX SMC.
If you are interested in text on spine inserts for ring binders, see
Section 3.11 in Digital Standard 073-0 for those specs. The order of
information has not changed on ring binders spine inserts.
Regards,
Alice
