What's Next on The TNPUBS Cluster?
---------------------------------------------------
    On 16-Feb, we added 64Mb each to Leaf and Inter.

    This upgrade will help to address the residual performance
    problems brought about by Interleaf v5.3. As a result of this
    upgrade, this will be the configuration on TNPUBS:

    System	#CPUs		Memory
    INTER	4		256Mb
    LEAF	4		256Mb
    WORDY	2		176Mb
    VERBOS	2		176Mb
    				886Mb Total

    We have set a goal of 1Gb cluster-wide. To reach that goal, Scott
    has been monitoring DIAL and other channels, looking for
    inexpensive gear. As we locate more memory and related modules, we
    will announce installation schedules.

=============================================================================
Why All This Moving of Files on The TNPUBS Cluster?
---------------------------------------------------

    Here are the steps planned during the next few months to make our
    file management simpler and safer:

    1. Assigning owners to the Interleaf catalog and template files,
    allowing only those people to modify the files assigned to them.
    The catalogs and templates in the Comm Cabinet will become
    read-only, with special update procedures for maintenance.

    The ISO 9000 certification process is bringing many issues to the
    forefront. One requirement for certification is that we be able to
    prove that we can consistent produce documents that meet our group
    and corporate standards for technical publications. Each writer
    must be able to locate the current and complete specifications for
    a given document. We must start by bringing the source documents
    into better control. Watch for further news on this work from the
    ISO 9000 team.

    2. Continued cleanup of the public disk with the emphasis on
    removing files that no one claims. Even including the work
    necessary to restore selected files, we still reclaimed about one
    millions blocks on the public disk.

    The cleanup helps to improves performance of the disk and helps to
    enable people to locate the information they need more quickly.

    3. Archiving to CD-ROM. Files that are required for long-term
    storage and that are stable should be moved to a CD-ROM. The cost
    for archiving on CD-ROM is as little as one-tenth the cost of
    storing data on a magnetic disk (RA71 up to an RA92). The CD-ROM
    is accessible just as with an RA- disk. They only difference is
    that the CD-ROM is write-locked.

    There seem to be three areas of information naturally suited to
    CD-ROM storage:

    - Art files. CD-ROM is a popular medium for publishing commercial
    clip art. Even if we do not make the art source files outside T&N
    Pubs, we can locate and access our material more readily.

    - Public Disk reference areas, esp. PostScript files of existing docs.

    - Source files for already-published docs. We have the last CMS
    library on CDROM today.

    I will be developing a process for this CDROM archiving work and
    will look forward toward your comment at future User Forum
    meetings.

Tools Tip: Copying files
---------------------------------------------------
    When copying files from a disk on TNPUBS or a workstation in the
    group to a disk on TNPUBS, you need not (and should not) use the
    cluster name in the destination string.

    If you specify the destination file as
    TNPUBS::PUBLIC$DISK:[PUBLIC.MUMBLE]FUBARB.TXT, for example, you
    wind up coming in as a network process. In some cases, you will
    not be able to write to certain directories, which are protected
    again world:write; in others, the protections and ownership will
    be incorrect, thus denying someone else access to the files.

    Use the following command as a general guideline when copying to a
    directory on the Public disk on TNPUBS:

    $ COPY your-file.ext PUBLIC$DISK:[PUBLIC.sub-dir] /PROT=(G:WERD,W:R)/LOG

    Questions, etc. to me.

=============================================================================
What's New?
---------------------------------------------------
    This section lists some of the Field Test software currently being
    evaluated in T&N Pubs.

    All of the following are running on ISOISA. Right now there's
    nothing in any of these products that would warrant rushing them
    onto the TNPUBS cluster. If you are interested in demos of any of
    these, let me know.

    OpenVMS T6.0

    The Amber release of VMS, currently in External Field Test. I am
    evalutating it on ISOISA. I have yet to implement Help/Message.
    The major irritant is that Interleaf 5.3 does not run on this
    version of VMS. Interleaf claims that the problem resides with
    VMS; no word from either side on the timimg for a fix.

    For more information, see the VAXWRK::VMS_FIELD_TESTS conference.

    Notes T2.4

    I am previewing Notes 2.4 on ISOISA. It handles large files better
    and contains a number of bug fixes. No major new functionality.

    For more information, see the SMPTE::VAXNOTESIFT24 conference.

    VTX TR 1.1

    This extension of VTX supports a number of text retrieval
    services. My major delight surfaced when <form><enter> was no
    longer required; a <return> or two handles most queries. VTX also
    provides a Motif interface.

    For more information, CASEE::VTX_TECHNICAL

    Reliable Flow Manager

    RFM is a prototype tool for modeling processes and workflow. It's
    still very new, but might be an interesting tool to assist the
    ISO9000 program.

    WorldView

    We hope to acquire some demo versions of WorldView (an online
    information presentation package) from Interleaf. Stay tuned.

Who's This "We" You Keep Talking About?
---------------------------------------------------

    The following people are responsible for the systems, equipment,
    and software support for T&N Publications.

    Karl Hakkarainen - Planning and strategy for T&N Pubs computing
    and information management. System and tools support (Interleaf,
    Document, DECwrite). Capital equipment and software acquisition.

    Mark Kimball - Systems and tools support with a particular focus
    on PC and Ultrix systems

    Paul Keating - System manager for TNPUBS and PC support contact.
    (Paul works for NaCTS and should be contacted through the Technical
    Services Resource folks.)

    Scott Forten - Equipment issues, printers, and general operations

    For more information on who to call and when, see the 911 list. An
    Interleaf copy is available in the top level of the Interleaf V5
    Comm cab. That document will be updated as needed; I will mention
    changes in these bulletins. Printed copies are available outside
    my office.

Frequently Asked Question regarding Interleaf V5
---------------------------------------------------
    Q: Someone mentioned that the "complete" V5 doc set is available
    via VXT online? True?

    A: Yes.

    To get to it:

    When running VXT or a version of Interleaf displayed from the
    cluster:

    1. With nothing selected, Custom->ToolMgr
    2. In the ToolMgr window, Select Interleaf
    3. Set the button for Active Ref to 1.
    4. Apply the changes (MB2 Apply)
    5. Close the ToolMgr
    6. Create->Tools->Active Ref->Interleaf 5 Features document
    7. Open the newly created icon.

    If you are using Interleaf on a stand-alone workstation and would
    like access to this online reference set, let me know. There are a
    couple of ways of configuring Interleaf to support the Active
    Reference feature.

    This Active Reference document contains the full Interleaf V5 user
    documentation. The Active Reference document covers the major
    aspects of the Interleaf software, including creating text and
    graphics elements, creating and managing books, editing, and
    customization.

    In a future Tools Time, I'll discuss additional topics in the Tool
    Manager, User Profile, and other Active Reference documents.

Where Can I Get More Information?
---------------------------------------------------
    The TNPUBS::NACLEAF Notes Conference is the repository for tips
    and hints for our composition systems: Interleaf, Document, and
    DECwrite. As new information becomes available or new problems
    solved for our documentation tools, the discoverer will post a
    note in the conference.

    If you discover something, please take a few minutes to post a
    note for the benefit of your colleagues.

    To add the NacLeaf conference to your Notebook:

    In Notes:
    ADD ENTRY TNPUBS::NACLEAF.

Interleaf Bug Reports
---------------------------------------------------
    Each manager has received a copy of the Interleaf system report,
    January 1993. This contains a summary of the problems reported to
    Interleaf for the currently supported platforms and software
    versions.

    Steve Jong also reports another bug known to Interleaf. If, in the
    User Profile, you set the attribute for accurate line endings on
    On, text may jump into the left margin. There is no workaround to
    this bug, except not to use this feature.

Is there a Microsoft Word-->Interleaf converter?
---------------------------------------------------

    Interleaf provides an input filter for Microsoft Word/RTF files.
    You can add the filter to your array of filters with the following
    procedure:

    With nothing selected on the Interleaf Desktop:

        1. Custom->Misc->Filter Setup.

        2. Choose Add a filter

        3. Select item 15, "MS Word/RTF into Interleaf"

        4. You will then be presented with several options. None is
        required. You may take the defaults for all by selecting
        Cancel.

        5. Supply a name such as RTF-to-IWS so you can easily identify
        the filter among your filter options.

    Once the filter is setup, you may copy files to your desktop
    directory ([username.IWS5DESKTOP]) and then use the
    Custom->Misc->Filter->filtername on the selected file.

    A Interleaf to MS Word/RTF is also available for added cost; we're
    evaluating the business need for such a filter in this group.

UCX on TNPUBS
---------------------------------------------------

    UCX is now running on TNPUBS. UCX, the common name for DEC TCP/IP
    Services for VMS, is a set of software products that facilitate
    communication and file sharing between a VAX/VMS server and UNIX
    (TM) clients. DEC TCP/IP Services support networking, file
    access, and application development between VAX/VMS servers and
    UNIX clients.

    For more information about UCX and its supported services, see
    HELP UCX on TNPUBS. In addition, see the DEC TCP/IP Services for
    VMS documentation in the Telecommunications and Networks bookshelf
    on Bookreader.

    Future editions of Tool Time will show uses and features of UCX
    for our documentation activities.

=============================================================================
EDT Going Away?
---------------------------------------------------

    As I mentioned in a recent mail message, the venerable text editor
    EDT has been retired. This means that there will be no further
    development on it. While I can't be certain, I suspect that at
    some point EDT will no longer be shipped as a standard component
    for VMS.

    Not to worry, though, It's not likely to happen any time soon.
    EDT is still a part of VMS 6.0.

    The recommended replacement for EDT on VMS is DECTPU (Text
    Processing Utility). DECTPU has been available on VMS for more
    than five years and on Ultrix for a year or two.

    DECTPU is a programming language used to develop text processing
    applications. EVE, written in DECTPU, is the editor that you
    receive you give the command EDIT/TPU. Other applications using
    DECTPU include Notes, LSE, and the VMS Debugger. You can also use
    EVE as your default editor in Mail with the Mail command SET
    EDITOR TPU.

    To start the EVE editor from the $ prompt:

    $ EDIT/TPU filename.ext

    There are two quick commands that will help you to get started
    with EVE. Press the Do key and then type the rest of the command.

    	<do> set keypad edt

    This command sets up the keypd to emulate the EDT-style keypad.
    (Note that customizations from your EDTINI.EDT file will not be
    recognized.)

    	<do> help new user

    This command provides you with an overview of EVE and DECTPU
    features.

    I'll have more about TPU/EVE in future Tool Time issues.

Interleaf Zoom Bug
---------------------------------------------------
From:	TNPUBS::JONG "Typo? What tpyo?  10-Mar-1993 1720" 10-MAR-1993 17:36:25.46

Subj:	A bug report, a new Interleaf use Q & A, or whatever

[This is all verified with Interleaf support, by the way--sfj]

QUESTION: I used View > Zoom > Larger so I could see what I'm doing, but lines
of text suddenly jumped to the left!

ANSWER: This is a known bug with zooming. It happens consistently with text in
justified components and randomly with text in other components. When you
restore the view to normal size, the problem goes away.

QUESTION: If I print zoomed pages, are the lines of text OK?

ANSWER: No, but then the printed text is also zoomed. That's not what you
want, is it? Always set the view to normal size (x1) before printing.

=============================================================================
VMS accounts and user directories
---------------------------------------------------

    When a person leaves the group, the supervisor or project leader
    will often ask me not to delete the account. "We need to use those
    files."

    The departed user's directories and files can exist after the
    account has been disabled or deleted. The account is just a record
    in the system user authorization file (SYSUAF); the directories
    are created separately and exist independently until explictly
    removed. As required by corporate security standards, accounts
    must be disabled at the time a person leaves the group.
    Directories and files, however, can persist for as long as they
    are needed by the group.

    Typically, unless I hear otherwise from the supervisor or project
    leader, I'll remove a departed user's directories one to four
    weeks after the person leaves. As always, files remain available
    from TSR's backup many months after the file have been deleted.

Interleaf Desktop Utility (IDU)

    Interleaf V5.3 provides a utility to assist in the management of
    files, containers, and other directories. The Interleaf Desktop
    Utility is similar to file management utilities such as VMS
    Backup, Unix tar, and DOS ZIP. (As with VMS Backup, IDU does not
    provide data compression.)

    In its simplest form, IDU offers you a method for moving an
    Interleaf container, such as a book or folder. For example, here
    are the commands that you would use to bring a book from your
    desktop to the Temp Transfer drawer:

    1. Set default to the directory where book is located. In this
    case, the book is located in a folder named Work.

    	$ SET DEF dev:[username.IWS5DESKTOP.work_fdr]

    2. Create an IDU file. We'll use the v option, which prints out
    the names of the files that are being stored by IDU. This
    procedure creates a file named DEFAULT.IDU.

    	$ IDU -CV my_book.dir

    3. Write the file to target directory. In this procedure, IDU will
    look for a default file named DEFAULT.IDU, which we created in
    step 2. The W option instructs IDU to set a new working directory
    before extracting the files.

    	$ IDU -CXW IWS$DISK:[IWS5.COMMUNICAION_CAB.TEMP_TRANSFER_DRW]

    4. You may then delete DEFAULT.IDU; from your directory.

    The major advantage of using IDU to move files, rather than the
    desktop cut and paste method, is that IDU doesn't tie up your
    desktop. You can execute the IDU procedure in batch or from
    another DCL window and continue to work in Interleaf. (You should
    not work on files that IDU is copying or writing; your results
    will be unpredictable.)

    For more information about IDU, see the online help:

    $ IDU -HELP

    For more help, use the Verbose option

    $ IDU -VH

Rectangular Cut-and-Paste [Reflecting Tool Time #5 Addendum]
======================================================================

    The EVE editor provides you with a rectangular cut and paste
    feature. This allows you to edit columns of information.

    For example, if you want to move the next paragraph from its present
    five space indent to the left margin, you would use the following
    EVE Commands. (All commands may be abbreviated; EVE will prompt
    you with options if you supply an ambiguous abbreviation.)

    Position your cursor at the first word of the paragraph, at the P
    in Position.

    <DO>BOX SELECT

    Move the cursor to lower right corner, ->here.

    <Do>BOX CUT INS

    Move the cursor to the left margin.

Question and Answer Department
======================================================================
    [This regular section is based on specific questions posed by
    people in T&N Pubs during the last week or two.]

How do you control print queues in DECwindows Mail?

    DECwindows Mail uses the DECWindows Print Widget to handle
    printing tasks. The Print Widget delivers a graphical interface to
    the selection of print queues and parameters.

    VMSMAIL remembers your preferred print queue when you supply the
    SET PRINT queue-name command in Mail or looks for the logical
    name SYS$PRINT as a pointer to a queue name.

    Once you have selected a queue and other parameters in DECwindows
    Mail, those selections are preserved for the duration of your
    session. Unfortunately, those parameters are not automatically
    saved from session to session.

    This can mean that if you simply print a message in a new
    DECwindows mail session, without specifying a print queue, your
    job will be sent to the first queue on the list. Most of the time,
    the first queue name on the Print Widget list is 3$LPN (an lp27 in
    the LKG1-3 lab).

    There is a way to inform the Print Widget about the queues you
    want to use for specific filetypes within mail. Adding these lines
    to your login.com will narrow the field for printing from
    DECWmail.

    $ DEFINE DECW$PRINTER_FORMAT_TEXT	your-preferred-text-queue

    NaCTS upgraded the raster image processor (RIP) on LKG Kodak 1392
    last week. The result is a significant improvement in both the
    imaging and printing times of the printer. (Imaging time is the
    amount of time it takes for the Kodak to read in the file and
    prepare an image in memory; printing is the time necessary to send
    that image to paper.) Overall throughput has improved 2:1.

    If you want to print multiple jobs on the Kodak, you are better
    off using the /job_count qualifier, rather than the /copies
    qualifier. With /job_count, the Kodak will read one image of the
    job into memory and print it the designated number of times. Using
    /copies, the print queue gathers the job multiple times into a
    single huge job.

$ print/que=kodak A-FILE-TO-CALL-MY-OWN.PS /job=2
Job A-FILE-TO-CALL-MY-OWN (queue KODAK_LEAF, entry 211) started on KODAK_LEAF

    NaCTS is now offering a service to the print services users in
    LKG. Large jobs (probably those over 5000 blocks for our group)
    will be automatically rerouted to the Kodak printer. We are
    considering adding this feature to the LPS20 queues in LKG. If you
    have thoughts on this, let me know.

Command line cleanup of Interleaf 5 desktop

    You may run the Interleaf cleanup of your desktop from desktop or
    from the DCL command line. The cleanup removes backup files and
    checkpoint files , but does not empty the clipboard. In order to
    clean the clipboard, you must purge or delete the items directly.

    To run the cleanup from the command line:

    $ IWS_CLEANUP desktop-directory-spec

    Example:
    $ IWS_CLEANUP USER$2120:[CHESS.IWS5DESKTOP]

    When in an Interleaf session you can clean various containers or
    the whole desktop with Custom->Misc->Cleanup.

EVE/TPU    Initialization Files

Extract the following file and use it as a template for creating your own key
definition in the EVE editor. More next week on how to add customized TPU
procedures to your editing environment.

!---------------------------------------------------------------------------
! Sample MYEVE.EVE initialization file.
!
! Invoke with the command:
!
! 	EDIT/TPU/INIT=MYEVE.EVE filename.txt
!
! Karl Hakkarainen March 1993
! -------------------------------------
! First enable the gold key as PF1
!
SET GOLD KEY PF1
!
! Define the ctrl-key sequences
!
!          KeyName	EVE Command
!
DEFINE KEY=CTRL-D	ERASE CHARACTER
!
! Set up some gold key sequences.
!
DEFINE KEY=GOLD-I	INCLUDE FILE 'sys$login:signature.file'
DEFINE KEY=GOLD-2	TWO WINDOWS
DEFINE KEY=GOLD-1	ONE WINDOW
!
! These next two keys allow you to execute a DCL command
! in an EVE buffer and then drop the contents into the
! file you're editing. Real handy for interactive example.
!
DEFINE KEY=GOLD-D 	DCL
DEFINE KEY=GOLD-CTRL-D	TPU COPY_TEXT(eve$dcl_buffer)
!
! End of MYEVE.EVE

Follow-up on Bookreader/WorldView mail.

    Earlier this week I sent a message to the group from Linda
    Knight, announcing the end of Bookreader development. Since then
    I've fielded a number of questions regarding the future of
    projects that use Bookreader. So far, there's a lot we don't know.

    In brief, I believe that we need to continue to deliver Bookreader
    products until we learn otherwise. Discuss your project
    requirements for online information with your supervisor. As new
    information about the products and strategies becomes available,
    I'll include more detail in upcoming Tool Time issues.

    We are also actively investigating WorldView as the next major
    online delivery product. We have temporary licenses for the viewer
    portion of WorldView, the display portion akin to Bookreader, and
    for WorldView Press, the portion that builds the books. We will
    have the products installed and running next week; watch for an
    announcement.

    The following is our testing plan for WorldView during the next
    two months. I will be looking for volunteers to test some specific
    functionality (printing, cross-references, and searches) as well
    having people try out WorldView for its general usefulness.

    Test Plan

    1. Install WorldView on supported platforms.

            VMS = TNPUBS and ISOISA
            DOS/Windows = TNPUBS file server
            Unix = TNPIX (Bundled with WorldPress)

            (Please contact me if your system is not listed here and
            you can participate in the testing.)

    2. Install WorldView Press on TNPIX

    3. Prepare sample document collection

        T&N Buyer's Guide, July 1992

        Selected IPA documents

        Converted sample docsets, including Interleaf and DECwrite.
        We'll be investigating other import functions (MS Word and
        PostScript) and conversions (SDML and DSR)

    4. Publish formal access procedures and testing request. Users
    should plan to record comments, requests for WorldView in a note
    in the NacLeaf notes conference.

    5. Add review of comments and status to User Forum of April and
    May. Updates to procedures will be included in future Tool Time
    issues.

    6. Publish final report on 1-June. (This allows time for purchase
    of product if we decide to continue to use it, irrespective of
    corporate online strategies.)

    More later as we move along.

Try not to set default to remote system.
======================================================================

While the absolute restriction of setting default to a remote system
($ SET DEFAULT NODE::DISK:[DIR]) has been lifted from VMS, your results may
still be unpredictable. Print and batch functions are also restricted. See
PRINT /REMOTE for details. Other file functions, such as directory commands,
work well.

======================================================================
Time to get rid of PSVIEW symbol.
======================================================================

Many of you have an old symbol pointing to an even older PostScript previewer.
That version, originally released with VMS 5.1, is no longer supported. Check
to see how you're invoking the PostScript previewer. The present version is
bundled in with the CDA Viewer.

Here's an updated symbol definition for the PS previewer.

$ PSVIEW :== VIEW/INTERFACE=DECWINDOWS/FORMAT=PS

Then

$ PSVIEW filename.PS

Remember that the PS preview is not supported on VXT.
