Some docs give me that pop-up when I open them. Any idea why?

Most of the time, that message comes from two sources:

    1. The attribute file has a permission on it that's not letting you
    access the file.

    2. The .doc file has been deleted, but the attribute file has not. The
person who tried to cut the icon didn't have sufficient permissions to
delete both the attribute file and the .doc file; just the .doc got
    nuked.

Check the property sheet on the icon. If it says, "this is an
incomplete file" then then #2 is at work. If it doesn't allow you to
see the prop sheet or if the permissions are very restrictive, then
    it's #1.
