We are still planning the upgrade of the TNPUBS cluster to Motif,
Interleaf 5.3, and BookreaderPlus (now called Bookreader 4.0 IFT)
for tomorrow, 3-Oct, as discussed in Paul Keating's memo. Here are
a few more items of note and a couple of reminders.
    ______________________________________________________________________
    Items of Note
    ______________________________________________________________________
When you start up Interleaf 5.3 for the first time, it will create
a new V5 desktop for you. As soon as you have the new desktop,
create a link to a start kit:

    	Create->Container->Cabinet

    	Copy->Link to->Selected Object

Paste the copied cabinet (and delete the previous one)

Edit the prop sheet of the new cabinet and change the path to
    	point to: IWS$DISK:[IWS5.COMMUNICATION_CAB.TOOLS_DRW]

Close the property and open the cabinet.

Copy the folder titled Starter Kit to your desktop. Open the
folder and read the file named Getting Started.

The Getting Started document will outline how to create a link to
your V4 desktop, a couple of ways to transfer files, and how to
	create a V5 Communications Cab.

The version of BookreaderPlus, now called Bookreader V4.0,
contains the first release of the character cell interface. Please
give it a try and report any problems to me or see the
    VIA::BOOKREADER Notes conference.

To learn about Motif keyboard and mouse, see
                       Tools$Disk:[Tools]Motif.PS

(The .PS file was created by opening the Motif help from the
Motif desktop, which uses Bookreader for a display, and using the
Bookreader V4.0 print function to create a .PS file.)

    ______________________________________________________________________
    Reminders
    ______________________________________________________________________
This upgrade will be applied to the TNPUBS cluster only.
Individual VS3100s will be upgraded during the coming weeks. If
you have an immediate need to use any of the new products, let me
know and I'll add you to the start of the list. Other upgrades
will take place by work groups.

Because the cluster will be coming down, please plan to shut down
your workstations this afternoon or reboot on Monday to
    reestablish your DFS links.

Here are a few more items for your consideration as you settle in
with the Motif/Interleaf V5.3 environment on the TNPUBS cluster.

    - **Correction**

To add a cabinet pointing to the starter kit, use the pathname
    IWS$DISK:[IWS5.COMMUNICATION_CAB]TOOLS_DRW.DIR

    - **VXT Users Only**
Check your login.com files for any references to IWS_LOGIN.COM.
If you find any, remove them before attempting to start Interleaf.
IWS_LOGIN calls startup files for V4. The V5 startup environement
is already in place at the system level.

(Workstation users should make note of this. When your systems are
upgrade, you should also remove references to IWS_LOGIN.COM.)

    - If you discover any problems with the way in which your
workstation screen appears (such as white text on a black
background when you were expecting otherwise, or menu selections
not highlighted), contact Paul, Mark, or me.

    - If you try to run the IL2B converter, you may encounter problems
with the mix of v4 and v5 environments. In brief, delete the IWS
symbol before you attempt to use the IL2B converter:

    	$ DELETE/SYM/GL IWS

Use the Interleaf<->DDIF in the same you have have before.

73.3After the first working dayISOISA::HAKKARAINENBeatniks out to make it rich.Mon Oct 05 1992 18:3914
1. Before opening books, check the catalogs therein to make sure that all
of the exports selected (things such as components, page numbers, etc.)
Otherwise, your catalogs will have no effect on your document.

2. Creating a PostScript file no longer requires the Printerleaf->filter
step; you can simply Print->Document-> Desktop, selecting what type of
PostScript printer you'd prefer.

3. Bookreader T4.0, aka BookreaderPlus, with print, search, etc., is
installed on the cluster.

Watch this space for further notes.

A few notes regarding the upgrade of the TNPUBS computing environment:

    Interleaf 5.3

Catalogs copied from V4 to V5 may not always export all of
their properties. When you copy a catalog into a V5
environment, open the property sheet and make certain that the
exports for all except page properties (and others, as your
document requires it) are enabled. If you're not familiar with
the property sheets and catalogs, check with your local
        LeafMeisterin/Meister or let me know.

        ----

The V5 Communication Cab drawers are under the jurisdiction of
the Drawer Captains assigned last year. As a general rule,
files won't move from V4 Comm Cab to V5 Comm Cab until the
group that uses that drawer decides that it's necessary. At
that point, Mark Kimball and I will be glad to assist with the
move. We will not, however, initiate moves of Comm Cab
        material without a request.

        * No V5 Interleaf files should be placed in the V4 Comm Cab. *

    Workstation Images

Paul Keating is putting the finishing touches on the new
workstation image. The image will include VMS 5.5-2 SSB kit,
release on 13-Oct. We have received requests for about a dozen
immediate upgrades. (Most of the first upgrades will take
place in LKG2 and TAY2.) We'll start the upgrades as soon as
the image is available, most likely within the next few days.

When the upgrades start, I'll send out an updated version of
the getting-started procedures. We have been able to use a new
feature to assist in the migration of files from a V4.3
        environment to V5.3.

Other upgrades will take place on a group-by-group basis.
Let me know if you have reasons for receiving an early or late
        upgrade.

Note that no VS2000s will receive this new workstation image.
Neither Interleaf 5.3 nor VMS 5.5 support VS2000s as
stand-alone workstations. All stand-alone workstations will be
        converted to VXT use.

    Capital

We have learned that our capital equipment budget has been
frozen, at least for one more quarter and probably for the
whole year. That means no new capital equipment of any sort.
Capital, in this context, is defined as any equipment that
costs $1,000 or more at transfer cost or in real dollars (for
external equipment). Expensed items, less than $1,000, can be
        purchased, but carefully.

Scott and I will be reviewing DIAL and other channels for
spare gear. If you have an _urgent_ need for a specific piece
of equipment, send a note to me. I can't predict if or when
such equipment might be available, but we'll try to track down
the stuff we need to get our jobs done.

This message and other related items will be posted in the NACLEAF
notes conference. Check there for the latest summary of
    information regarding the upgrades.
