I just wanted to record a problem Rikk H. and I had while trying to share files this year. Any solutions are welcome. Rikk and I got this great idea that we could jointly write our 450 page management guide using Interleaf. The book was in four parts and Rikk was responsible for one while I was responsible for three. This was our theoretical procedure: We thought that we could write on our own desktops and make links to our files available in the Comm cabinet. When it came time to produce PS versions I could link his links to my desktop and paste them in their proper position in my book. Then I simply build a printerleaf version and convert it to postscript. WRONG!! The file came out in several pieces: from the title page to the end of my part II. My part IV and appendix The index Rikk's parts didn't exist It seems that Rikk is on a different disk than I am. His disk was one of the later additions to our cluster. My environment is not as aware of his disk as it is of the original disks on the cluster so it sort of considers us to be in separate groups. Therefore I can't access his stuff. Obviously file sharing has some bugs in Interleaf. I want to make everyone aware of this in case they want to develop books jointly. There are work-arounds. You can copy->normal the files to one desktop and build from there. One day maybe there will be a fix. The bottom line is that it doesn't work now.

The situation that Casey noted in .0 is quite commmon, particularly among the workstations that have been around for a while. As the workstations are upgraded to the RZ24/Motif/Interleaf V5.x/VMS 5.5, the systems will recognize the newer disks. In addition, we have added several utility disks. These utility disks will allow use to isolate the large storage areas, such as the Comm Cabinet, Public$Disk, and related tools areas. This should allow us to consolidate the number of user disks. So, in brief, if your workstation doesn't recognize some disk on the cluster, send mail to CCD; they can add the pointer immediately on your workstation. It might then require a restart of Interleaf, but you should be able to share files as needed. /kh |
