Process Analysis
Task Force-PPATF
SUBJECT: Quick Lookup Guide for Developing Documentation
The Production Process Analysis Task Force (PPATF) announces
availability of a Quick Lookup Guide for Developing Doc-
umentation. It's a resource document filled with time-saving,
essential tips for information professionals who are cur-
rently using or plan to use VAX DOCUMENT Version 2.0 for
electronic and hardcopy documentation components.
The lookup guide was developed to maximize efficiency and
quality while further reducing final production schedules.
Production's exposure to tools and processing problems is
more concentrated than that experienced by any of its busi-
ness partners on a regular basis. The task force analyzed
all production activities for redundancy, then went on to
identify problem areas directly attributable to increased
cycle time and/or decreased quality. Study revealed sig-
nificant effort (and time) spent during final production
solving coding, formatting, and technical or submission prob-
lems which could easily be corrected or prevented prior to
production. The task force further determined lack of ac-
curate information as the primary cause for the preventable
problems, and decided to compile and distribute that spe-
cific information in the form of a quick lookup guide.
Page 2
The quick lookup guide is a basic information resource sup-
plement to VAX DOCUMENT 2.0 documentation and to other internal
reference information. It contains pointers to tools, standards,
documentation, and resources. It presents potential problems
and solutions from the production perspective, but should
prove useful to new or experienced information professionals
who are planning to upgrade/migrate to VAX DOCUMENT 2.0,
suffering from "information overload," or simply looking to
streamline final production schedules.
The guide is available online in hardcopy and electronic
output formats (PS, LINE, DECW$BOOK*). The PostScript version
of the guide is 36 pages.
Copy the files from the following public directory:
DONVAN::USER5:[ZKKITS.PUBLIC]QLG_DEV_DOC(.ps, .line, .decw$book*)
Thanks to all the writers, editors, and publishing pro-
fessionals who helped develop the information and review the
quick lookup guide.
