46.0. "Leaving Files Open Leaves You Open to Trouble" by WORDY::MILGROM () Wed Oct 31 1990 09:43
Here's something I learned the hard way.
I share it hoping you learn the easy way!
When you leave your desk, don't leave a file opened, even if you
have put Interleaf in Pause mode (for security). If the system crashes,
you can lose a lot of edits. It's best to close the file each time
you leave your desk.
What I used to do just before leaving my office to go to lunch or
leave for home was: Save the opened file and keep it open, then
put my workstation in Pause. I thought that saving the file would
protect me from losing the latest edits if the system crashed while
I was away from my desk. I did this to save the time required for
closing the file and then having to reopen it when I returned.
But the other day I learned that the time saved is
not worth the time lost when the system crashes. Even though the
file had been saved just before I left, I still lost quite a few
edits (made before the file was saved).
