SUBJECT: Announcing the CUP Doctype Family Version 1.0
Yes, it's true. After nearly 1 years of planning, devel-
opment, testing, and implementation, the CUP Doctype Fam-
ily V1.0 is ready for distribution and production use.
This new set of doctypes will provide all CUP writing groups
with a common page layout design, implemented in the form
of a single family of doctypes.
This announcement is the direct result of hard work and ded-
ication on the part of Kathy Greenleaf, who implemented the
functionality and page layout specifications, and Edna Elle,
who designed the page layout and provided design specifications.
Both jobs were especially difficult given the wide variety
and extensive amount of doctype requirements submitted by
the various writing organizations.

Besides Kathy and Edna, I would also like to thank the Doc-
type Development Team, the Doctype Review Board and the many
writers, editors, and production personnel who submitted
requirements, offered input, and helped us field test the
CUP Doctype Family.
In addition to a new standard page layout design, the doc-
types include new features, such as:
o Document-wide attribute tags for defining running heads
and footers, numbered versus unnumbered heads, and 7x9
page margin settings
o New copyright tags that solve long-term internationaliz-
ation and coding problems
o Compliance with demand printing requirements for the Elec-
tronic Documentation Mastering System (EDMS)
These features and other improvements were the result of:
o Doctype requirements gathered from each of the CUP
writing, editing, and production organizations
o Fixes to many bugs and problems identified during an ex-
tensive doctype field test
The doctypes in the CUP Doctype Family are:
o CUP.7X9
o CUP.8_5X11
o CUP.A4
o CUP.A5
o CUP.ONLINE
The CUP.7X9 doctype permits three different left margin
settings, which are set using <DOCUMENT_ATTRIBUTE> tags.
CUP.A4 and CUP.A5 support the A4 and A5 international page
sizes.

User's Guide from:

When the CUP Doctypes kit is installed on your system,
these files will be copied automatically to the
DOC$LOCAL_FORMATS: directory on your system.
We are working on a CUP Doctype Family Quick Reference
Guide, which will summarize the steps required to build a
book using the new doctypes. That quick reference guide
will be available in the kit directory sometime after the
initial release of the doctypes.
Enter your comments, questions, and problems in the
CUP Doctypes Notes conference at CUPLET::CUP_DOCTYPES.
NOTE: CUPLET is a relatively new node on the network. If
it is unknown to your system network database, ask your
system manager to add CUPLET to the database, or try
4TRACK::CUP_DOCTYPES.
Your system manager can copy the installation kit for the
CUP Doctype Family using the following command:
$ COPY DONVAN::USER5:[ZKKITS.FAMILY]CUPFAMILY010.A
CUPFAMILY010.B
Please be sure to review the Release Notes before you in-
stall or use the doctypes. You can copy the Release Notes
using the following command:
$ COPY DONVAN::USER5:[ZKKITS.FAMILY]CUP_FAMILY_RELNOTES.PS
CUP_FAMILY_RELNOTES.TXT
All writing groups are strongly encouraged to begin migrat-
ing to the new CUP Family of Doctypes. However, responsi-
bility for scheduling the migration rests in the individ-
ual documentation teams. Consult with your supervisor or
manager for more information.
