This topic is reserved for info on what people
in the cost center are doing with, or learning
about using conversion tools, such as the
SDML-RTF converter, or SDML-SGML converter.

32.1Info on SDML to SGML ConverterTNPUBS::ICENOGLEKathyTue Jan 30 1996 16:2891
Attached is the info that launched me on doing some work
with the SDML to SGML converter (aka. DtoG)...

The converter itself has been installed on TNPUBS, but watch
it carefully whenever you run it. (I had some problems with
it getting into a continuous loop that caused the log file
to eat up disk space like crazy... it turned out to be a bug
in the source file.

Bottom line: make sure your SDML files are in good shape
and build w/o errors, AND read the DtoG user documentation
well before using the converter... What I've learned about
this tool so far is that you cannot just use it on the fly.

Another thing to consider is hiring the Production group
to do the conversion for you.. Some members of that group
already have experience working with this.

Hi Kathy,

Per mail sent from Kathy Haramundanis, heres information
on running the DtoG (SDML->SGML) converter yourself.

We're encouraged folks are starting to move this way.

The most work is if the SDML files are not Information Mapped
as thats the format of the DEC.dtd.
The parsing/cleaning up of the SGML files is time consuming but
can be done and the conversion sure beats recoding all the legacy
information. Once you've done a couple books you tend to
learn and have the same errors and can correct them easier.

As with any conversion -- its gets you most of the way there.
And depending on how cleanly coded your SDML files are will
determine how much SGML cleanup there is.

I'm one of the contact for DtoG and will help you --so feel free
to ask any questions.

First step is to copy the DEC DTD User's Guide:

DONVAN::USER4:[ZKKITS.DECDTD]DEC_DTD_UG.PS

The more you are familiar with the DTD the easier the conversions
will be.

Then copy the DtoG Kit and documentation:
 A good starting point is to read the DtoG User's Guide
 and release notes.
 If your system is running VMS 6.1 and up your all set.
 If your system is running a lower version of VMS --theres
 another file---let me know if this is your situation.

DONVAN::USER21:[PUBLIC.ATOOLS]DTOG003.A  (VMSINSTAL kit)
                              DTOG_UG_PROFILE.PS
                              DTOG_INSTALL_GUIDE.TXT(.ps)
                              DTOG003.RELEASE_NOTES

                              SGMLVERIFY.PS  (info on parser for
                                              the SGML source)
                              You'll need to set up the
                              SGMLVerify tool to parse the SGML
                              files.
                              These files are also available in:

DONVAN::USER21:[PUBLIC.ATOOLS]SGML.LSE
                              SGMLTOOLS$ERR.EXE
                              SGMLTOOLS$PARSE.EXE
                              SGMLTOOLS.COM
                              SGMLVERIFY.EXE
                              SGML_BUILD_STYLE.EXE
                              SGML_CONVERT.EXE

Neil Keefe is knowledgeable with the setup of this parser if you have
any trouble. Neil also has done conversions with DtoG and can help
there as well.

Good luck and Happy Converting!
Please let me know how your doing,
