Attached is the NCC training calendar for this quarter. The calendar
is a consolidated source of available training and support for our CC members'
highest training needs: PC environment and tools. In some cases, the training
and support is provided by volunteers from our own CC. Please print off the
calendar and take advantage of the variety of options provided.

||| About This Calendar ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Purpose This document lists Q3FY96 training options for NSCC
contributors. Its purpose is to provide advanced notice so
training interventions can be incorporated into work
schedules. This document will be updated and reissued
each quarter.
Background During Q4FY95, Patricia Baker commissioned a study of NSCC
training needs. The study identified ten areas of training
that NSCC contributors considered important. In order of
priority, they are:
o Online development tools
o PC environment
o WWW design and development
o Online help design and development
o Production submission
Basic level programming
o Multimedia design and development
o UNIX for OpenVMS
o Technical subject matter
o Usability design
Under Pat's sponsorship, an implementation team was formed to
identify and/or acquire training interventions to support each
of the areas listed.
Scope The first training options calendar (Q2FY96) focused on
the NSCC's top priority, Online Development Tools. The primary
focus of this calendar (Q3FY96) is NSCC's second priority, PC
Environment training, in addition to continuing to
address our need for training on tools. Other areas of
training will be addressed later in FY96.
Ongoing Periodically, the Training Implementation team will
assessment of survey NSCC contributors. If new training needs are
training needs identified, or if training priorities change, then the team
will reflect the findings in the next quarter's calendar.
The next survey will be conducted via email in February.
Comments and Send comments and questions to the training team at
questions BOOKIE::NSCC_TRAIN. After attending any of the training listed
in this calendar, please send a note indicating whether or not
the training met the stated objectives and your expectations.

/////////////////////////////// PROGRAM /////////////////////////////////////
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
A new program is underway to create many job aids that will help CC members
become more efficient and effective using PCs. The program needs your help!
<<<<<<< VOLUNTEERS NEEDED >>>>>>>
Creating a job aid is a fairly painless way to share your PC knowledge with
many others. All you need to do to help is create just one new job aid
covering a PC task you already know how to complete. Job aids are very short,
step-by-step descriptions of how to complete discrete tasks. We'd like to
offer job aids on the following topics and more:
o Developing an easy to use PC directory structure
o Moving, copying, and deleting files from your PC
o Capturing PC screens
o Specifying and changing printer setup
o Installing new drivers such as print drivers
o General PC system management "dos and don'ts"
o Connecting to, or disconnecting from, a network drive
o How to extract VMS mail into your PC account
o How to send PC files via VMS mail
o Backing up your PC files
o Tuning your PC for better performance
o .
o .
o .
<<<< CAN YOU HELP? >>>>
Joanne Roberts is the job aids program coordinator. Contact Joanne
at BOOKS::Roberts and tell her the topic(s) you can cover. Joanne will assign
you a topic that no one else is already covering and she will provide you
with a simple job aid template to use.
We have a few aids ready to be tested now. If you already have a job aid that
would be of use to NCC members, please contact Joanne so that she can include
it with the newest aids. Also, contact Joanne with suggestions for additional
job aid topics or to be a job aid tester.
Watch for an announcement soon about the availability of these new job aids
to everyone in NCC.

//////////////////////////////// PC JOB AIDS ///////////////////////////////////
//////////////////////////////// (Continued) ///////////////////////////////////
Job aids developed by other Digital groups are sometimes available at facility
lobby displays, in racks at the larger cafeterias, and so on. Job aids
developed for others may not be useful to you as system and network
configurations vary. The NCC Training Team has not tested job aids created
by other groups.
The following PC job aids were developed previously by the Technology and
Tools PC team of the ID Resource Group. If you have comments or suggestions
regarding these PC job aids, please post a reply to note 279 in the IDC Notes
Conference or send mail to BOOKIE::NSCC_TRAIN. These job aids are available in
KOOLIT::USER21:[PUBLIC.ATOOLS].
