Infobase of CBT material - EBIT NEWS 30-MAR-1993 15:21:15.11
    From:	DEMON::TARQUINIO "Paul Dyer Tarquinio 25-Mar-1993 1547" Subj:
Announcing: Computer-Based Training (CBT) Infobase on node DEMON

***************************************************************************

	<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< CBT INFOBASE >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The CBT Infobase is now ready for use. The following information
will describe the Infobase and explain how to access the Infobase from
node DEMON or from a remote node.

Please take a few minutes to access the Infobase and browse around.
I would appreciate any feedback regarding the structure and content of
the database, as well as ease of access and use. Also, please contact me
if you notice there is missing information or if you have additional material
you would like me to add to the Infobase.

CBT and Interactive Multimedia applications are changing at a rapid pace to
keep up with the revolution in multimedia technologies. Our goal is
that the CBT Infobase will continue to evolve and keep up with the
constant changes (no small task!). I am counting on your support!

Enjoy!

Regards, Paul

P.S. I would like to add information on Macintosh CBT tools. Any documents,
information, tools would be appreciated.

Contents of the Computer-Based Training (CBT) Infobase
------------------------------------------------------

Purpose of Infobase The CBT Infobase provides a central
                         repository for CBT and Multimedia information,
     			 including development guidelines, conventions,
                         authoring tools, demos, etc.

     			 The primary audience includes members of the
     			 Information Design and Consulting (IDC) Group.
     			 Other members of the Digital community are
     			 also welcome to access the Infobase.

Uses of the Infobase The Infobase will help you find information useful
                         to your project, such as demos, sample project plans,
                         documentation, and sizing models for various tools.
     			 The information, however, cannot be guaranteed to
     			 be complete and up to date.

Location of Infobase Information in this Infobase is available on:

                         DEMON::SYS$KITS:[CBT] and its subdirectories.

Accessing the Infobase The CBT Infobase will have world read access.
(from DEMON) The use of the SWING tool (Digital internal use
     			 only) will allow you to easily navigate the directory
     			 structure and locate the desired information.
     			 SWING also allows you to mail files to a location
     			 that you specify.

     			 If you are accessing the Infobase from node DEMON,
     			 enter the following commands:

     				$switch CBT
     			 	$swing

Accessing the Infobase To access the CBT Infobase from a node other than
( from another node) DEMON, you can log into a captive account by entering
     			 the following commands:

     				$ set host DEMON
     				Username: CBTINFO    (no password required)

     				$swing

About SWING The SWING utility will provide a hyerarchical
     			 structure for accessing the Infobase. Enter the
     			 letter  O  for (O)ptions, then S for (S)how Directory
     			 Name to display the full directory name at the
     			 top of the display.

     			 Use the arrow keys to navigate through the
     			 Infobase hierarchy and type F to list the files
     			 in the highlighted directory. The (O)ptions command
     			 and NETMAIL FILE menu option will allow you to mail
     			 the highlighted file. The (Q)uit
     			 command will bring you back one level.

Subj:	Announcing SES internal home page

The proof-of-concept SES Information Station (internal home page)
is now available for your use and comment. Please take advantage of this
opportunity to send us your comments about things you like, things you
don't like, and suggestions you have for things to add.

		Note:  This announcement is about
		the business card phase of the web site
		only. Other parts of the web site
		are still being created.

Access the SES Information Station by using your Mosaic or Netscape
browser and asking for the following URL:

	http://isoisa.zko.dec.com/station/

This takes you to the top-level SES Information Station. From this
top-level page you can browse through the organization (through CCC pages,
workgroup pages, and business cards), search for a resource that knows
a specific tool, or look at other information that may be useful to you.

The rest of this message provides answers to questions you may have.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOW DO I BROWSE THE ORGANIZATION?

	Start with the top-level SES Information Station, click on
	the section that says 'Organization Information' and then follow
	other links as you choose, for example to a specific capability
	capacity center.

HOW DO I FIND A RESOURCE THAT KNOWS A SPECIFIC TOOL?

	Start with the top-level SES Information Station, click on
	the section that says 'Searching this Site' and then follow
	the instructions for resource-search, clicking on a tool
	and a skill-level.

	After you submit your request, you receive a list of people
	who know the tool you have selected.

HOW DO I START MOSAIC OR NETSCAPE?

	If you are on a VMS system, type 'Mosaic' at the system prompt.
	This brings up the initial Mosaic screen. When the first
	Mosaic screen appears, select 'Open URL' from the File drop-down
	menu, and enter the SES Information Station URL given above.

		Note: If your workstation is in a hidden area,
		you may need to SET DISPLAY back to your
		workstation. If in doubt, check with your
		system manager.

	If you are on a PC, click on your Netscape icon, and enter
	the URL in the box at the top of your screen.

	If you don't have Mosaic or Netscape on your system, contact your
	system manager to have one of them installed.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN I GET A MESSAGE 'Error 404 Not Found...'?

	The file containing the information you requested is not yet
	available. Putting all the files in place for this organization-wide
	information resource will take time; not everyone has yet
	completed their business card, and some information files are
	still being written.

HOW WILL THIS INFORMATION BE KEPT UP TO DATE?

	Everyone who has created a business card or CCC page is
	responsible for keeping the files they have created up-to-date.
	If you have not yet completed your business card and placed
	it in the public area, you can still do so. If you would like
	to update your business card, you can also do so. Just make
	your changes and place your file in the same public area as before.
	The public areas are swept every other week to copy all the
	files to the main server, so all you need to do to get your
	updates to the server is to place your new file in your
	designated public area.

WHAT IF I DON'T REMEMBER MY PUBLIC AREA?

	Check with your project manager for the SES Internal Home Page
	project. The PMs for this project are listed in SES-bit #85
	that was sent out on 30-Oct-1995. The SES-bit also lists the
	public areas for each group.

WHERE SHOULD I SEND COMMENTS?

	Send comments on the top level SES Information Station
	to Barry Lein (META::LEIN). Send comments on the business
	cards or individual CCC pages to Kathy Haramundanis
	(KOOLIT::HARAMUNDANIS).

5.6Caution re: info in Doc Standards DirectoryTNPUBS::ICENOGLEKathyThu Jan 25 1996 20:1221
FYI - Apparently some of the info in the
doc standards directory is out of date.. for example:

"The Digital trademark list is dated 2/2/94 in that directory
but there is an updated version available (9/1/95) through VTX LAW.
The same situation exists for the third-party trademarks, which
were updated on 10/2/95 and the file's version is from 5/25/94.
The file also refers to STD073D.PS. This was updated to STD073E
on 7/31/95."

I've asked to see who is maintaining the directory
to see if we can get the problem fixed... If no one
is actively maintaining the directory, then maybe
we can at least make sure people have pointers to
how to get the most current standards (eg. VTX LAW)

..but for now, consider this a caution re: what's in there.

(Thanks to Mike Rogers for calling this to our attention.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                DO YOU NEED TO WRITE A PLAN FOR YOUR PROJECT?

Overview	As part of the SES Workbench program, three project
                plan templates have been created in Microsoft Word
                and VAX DOCUMENT. These plans have been reviewed by
                contributors from each capability/capacity center.
		The templates:

     		* Meet ISO 9001 requirements
     		* Provide guidance statements
     		* Provide pointers to additional information
       		* Provide pointers to sample plans and reports

                Project plans are not currently required within SES;
                however, you may be asked to write a plan for your
                project. The templates are for the following:

     		* Needs assessments
     		* Product information (documentation)
     		* Training and information solutions (courseware)

Pointers	The templates can be copied from:

		GEMVAX::RIDER:[PMTOOLS.TEMPLTS]
     		PLAN.DOT	   -  MS Word Version 6.0 Template
		PLAN_NDS.DOC/SDML  -  Needs Assessment
		PLAN_DPI.DOC/SDML  -  Product Information/Documentation
		PLAN_TIS.DOC/SDML - Training and Information Solutions

     		The following PostScript files were created from the
     		Microsoft Word templates:

		GEMVAX::RIDER:[PMTOOLS.TEMPLTS]
		PLAN_NDS.PS  -  Needs Assessment
		PLAN_DPI.PS  -  Product Information/Documentation
		PLAN_TIS.PS - Training and Information Solutions

Installation	To use these templates:

     		1. Copy the appropriate files to your project directory.

                2. For the Microsoft Word version of the template, copy
     		    the PLAN.DOT file to the Microsoft Word template
       		    directory. Typically the path for this directory is:

		    x:\MSOFFICE\WINWORD\TEMPLATE\PLAN.DOT

     	            (Where X is the appropriate device drive for the
		     location of MSOFFICE applications)

     		3. Open the appropriate template, such as PLAN_DPI.DOC.

     		4. If necessary, reattach the template:
     		    - Open the File menu
     		    - Choose Templates...
     		    - Click on Attach...
     		    - Double click on PLAN.DOT

     		5. The template plan is ready for your use.

MS Word:	After opening a PLAN_*.DOC file:
Editing Tips
     		* The guidance statements and pointers have been
     	          incorporated into the template as hidden text
     	          (text underlined with a dotted line). To VIEW
     	          the hidden text, click on the special characters
     	          (backward P) option located on the Formatting
     	          toolbar.

     	        * To VIEW this document without the hidden text,
     	          click on the special characters (backward P) option
     	          located on the Formatting toolbar.

     	        * To move to a specific section such as Project
     	          Management or Resource Requirements:
     	          - From the Edit menu, choose Bookmark
     	          - Double click on the section
     	          - Click on Close

     	        * To PRINT this document with the hidden text:
     	          - From the Tools menu, choose Options
     	          - Click on the Print tab
     	          - In the Include with Document area, choose Hidden Text
     	          - Click on OK
     	          - Print the document

Comments	If you have any questions or suggestions regarding
		these templates, please send mail to Marion Hamblett
     		at DEMON::HAMBLETT.
