8.0. "VoD Jewish Interest Meeting" by TNPUBS::GROSSMAN () Wed Feb 12 1992 08:37

    ***********************  ANNOUNCEMENT *********************************

    Event: Value of Diversity meeting about Jewish concerns

    Date:       Tuesday, February 25, 1992
    Time:       12:00 pm
    Location: Chatham Conference Room, LKG2-1, Pole 4S
		King St., Littleton, MA

    Are you interested in Jewish identity, holidays, impact of the
    Holocaust, books, cuisine, child rearing, and . . .?

    If you would like to share these or other areas with this initial
    gathering of a Jewish Interest or Support Group, please attend.

    We will take a pulse to learn where the energy lies, and will
    address needs such as mutual support or educational programming.
    We will consider the need for an on-going group.

    This meeting is open to people from all sites. We welcome both Jews
    and non-Jews, such as intermarried spouses, who are concerned with
    issues relating to Jews in Digital.

    Please contact Laura Steinhart (TNPUBS::STEINHART, DTN 226-7239) if
    you plan to attend, so we can reserve an adequate room.

                                 Minutes

                    VoD Meeting About Jewish Concerns
                            February 25, 1992

    1. The meeting convened at 12 pm with a welcome by Laura Steinhart.

    2. Lilly Platt moderated the meeting. Thanks Lilly for a fine job!
    First, the 25 attendees introduced themselves. Each person answered
    the question, "What are you looking for in this group?"

    3. The group identified the following five categories of focus:

	* Education/awareness
	  "Having the world appreciate what we offer - creativity,
	  knowledge, history. Public awareness of holocaust affect on
	  our identity. Dealing with Jewish issues in the news. . ."

        * Self-discovery
	  "Observance/self discovery.  Non-persecution complex ('coming
	  out of the closet'). Become part of support group for personal
	  growth. . ."

        * Interfaith families/intermarriage
	  "Understanding/resolving marriage issues. Childrens issues -
	  religious, cultural."

        * Being Jewish at Digital
	  "Help Digital become aware of its Jewish employees and respect
	  their needs. Sensitivity in scheduling major events around the
	  holidays. Subtle anti-Semitism and problems in advancement.
	  Internalized anti-Semitism. Established Jewish community is
	  not well-structured to support DEC employees' life style, eg 2
	  working parents, long commutes, long hours."

        * Community
	  "Network and coordinate the group interests. Share experience
	  of being Jewish in the USA. Cultural ties. Making connections
	  with other Jewish people. Music/family. Curiosity/community."

    4. By consensus, the group decided to hold a second meeting and delay
    breaking into committees.

    5. The second planning meeting will be at 12 pm at LKG2 on March 10,
    in the Mystic conference room. The agenda will focus on Pesach. The
    moderator will be Laura Steinhart.

    There will also be a meeting at 12 pm at LKG2 on March 17 in the
    Mystic conference room, moderated by Sue Goldman, on self-exploration,
    community, and interfaith issues.

    6. To facilitate the formation of local support groups, attendees have
    received the roster. If you were unable to attend and wish to contact
    people at your worksite, please contact Laura for assistance. The
    following sites were represented: CTC, LJO, LKG, OFO, PKO, TAY.

    7. These minutes will be sent to the full distribution list and posted
    in BAGELS. If you wish to forward these minutes to potential
    participants, please do so. They should send their name, node, and DTN
    to Laura to be added to the list.
