This note replaces the original topic 20, which asked for confirmation of a rumor that a major operating system development project had been cancelled at Concord Road. The replies were to the affirmative. My question is, does anyone know what's happening to the people who'd been working on it? The project had two rather disparate groups of workers. First were the "CISLians", who had been brought to Billerica when Multics was capped and CISL was closed. My guess is that they are (nearly) all looking for other employment. The second group contained people brought into the project from elsewhere in the software development organization. One of the replies which was deleted contained comments from a frustrated member of this latter group.

As I was leaving the final decision had not been made on cancelling any major projects, but it was more a matter of when than if. The engineers who would have been assigned to this project will most likely be reassigned to another (more likely?) project which is being run out of France. Oui-s3 maybe?? It seems the French need a new OS and the US has an OS Development team looking for work. |
