18.0. "Thanksgiving Layoff/Reorganization" by ULTRA::KINDEL (Bill Kindel @ LTN2) Fri Nov 13 1987 08:56
Today's Boston Globe (and several news reports I've seen/heard)
announced a layoff/reorganization at Honeywell Bull. 500 of the
total 1600 jobs eliminated nationwide are here in Massachusetts,
with the implication being that they're mostly in manufacturing.
At the same time, there was a promise of a number of new jobs in
engineering opening up.
Phoenix manufacturing consolidates here in Lawrence, eliminating
another 800 jobs in the Valley of the Sun.
A new building (the second tower at Concord Rd?) will bring together
most non-manufacturing people in Billerica. Since 200 Smith St. has
been sold, I assume that means they're starting to plan the move.
It looks like the Financial Incentive Plan has been resurrected to help
select victims. Thinking back over previous layoffs, the 500 this time
could be a biggie depending upon how it's really distributed. I got
the feeling that the text of the announcement had been carefully worded
in that the sentence following the layoff announcement talked about
reducing manufacturing costs.
There had been some discussion about choosing between closing the
Chandler, AZ and Brighton, MA printed-circuit assembly lines, since
either one could handle the entire U.S. production. I guess we
now know which one survived.
If anyone has additional details, such as time schedules and the
*real* distribution of the layoffs, please enter them as replies.
