5312.0. "FY Goals and Bonuses" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Richard A. Warren) Mon Jun 02 1997 09:23

Over lunch a couple of friends and I noticed that
very little has publicly been said about how things are progressing with
respect to
the system business unit yearly goals and whether employee bonuses would in
fact
be paid!

Is there anyone out there with some insight into this? Ever since the
system business unit removed the CERT info from their web page, we
(underlings)
can't seem to get ANY information about our quarterly progress...

5312.1Chance for a bonusENGPTR::MCMAHONMon Jun 02 1997 14:4915
Well, Harry Copperman sent out a memo on 4/30 within which was this:

"The Systems Business Unit contributed significantly to DIGITAL's
overall profitability. Our SG&A was eight points lower than in Q2.
Gross margin was higher than forecast. Inventory levels were
significantly more favorable quarter to quarter and relative to
forecast. Specifically, I would like to congratulate the Americas
for their efforts resulting in dramatic improvement in their
    receivables position."

He goes on to say that the SBU is "on the hook for Q4 revenue" and that
he is "encouraged by our frontlog".

Sounds promising but of course, only time will tell.

Pretty funny stuff. Hey, I've got some swamp land in Florida if any
of you people expecting a bonus are interested! We should dig up the
notes from a year ago to compare them. I remember how things looked
good in Q3 for the bonus possibilities. Then all was quiet.
Reorganizations in the SBU made it unclear who was actually part of the
SBU and contributing to the bottom line. Oh, bummer, looks like the SBU
as a whole really didn't do very well. We were below our numbers, but,
shucks, since we kind of did promise a bonus, looks like it'll be in
    the 1-2% range...er, the 1-1.5% range...er, would you believe......?
I'll be pleasantly surprised when my bonus check arrives, and
please have the cardiac unit on standby if there are more than 3 digits
    in the amount.

Does that include the .00? :-)

5312.4Not as naive as I sound (in .1)ENGPTR::MCMAHONTue Jun 03 1997 14:2613
Actually, I should have put a smiley face at the end of my last line.
    I don't write/respond as often as I'm tempted because I've grown so
cynical that I know that the notes/replies I'd enter would most likely
earn me some adverse notice up the food chain. Of course, being as
cynical as I am, I figure it's already happened.

I'm not betting the kid's college fund on getting [much of] a bonus
this year. As has been noted, even if we do make the numbers, the rules
can be changed at any time to negate them (witness last year).

But hey, with our variable compensation plan, even though we don't get
the kind of raise percentages we used to, at least when the company
really takes off again, the bonuses will be huge!!

Based on the Business Week articles, we know one person whose bonus
will be huge, seeing as even when the company performance sucked, he
snagged the equivalent of $200 for every employee in the company. But
as many of you have pointed out (and in case he's reading this), he
    deserved every penny...and then some!

So that's where we get the 1-3-9 strategy. It all becomes clearer now...

And note the proximity to the Hopper! 8-)

But please, don't associate me with that strategy - unless of course,
it involves a raise and promotion to Vice President! I can see it now,
    Vice President of Numeric Strategies...
