5274.0. "Conscious decision" by TALER::UFTRING (Michael Uftring) Mon May 05 1997 11:56

Why does this company spend money on these things:

  - Sweeping sand onto the access roads of ZKO
  - Edging and mulching trees
  - Using a gas powered blower to remove six leaves from ZK2 access bridge

But not these things:

  - Repairing defective security equipment
  - Relocating obstructed security equipment

I guess next time the car thiefs from Lawrence pay us a visit
they will at least see a nice looking hunting groud.

Top ten reasons why ZKO facilities would rather garden than do
    security:

10 because our corporate image is more important than your car

9 because your not seeing the bigger picture, the whole, the grand
       plan, the synergy, the continuum...

8 because we spent all the money on security and still have the money
       left for gardening

7 because one comes out of a year long contract and the other is capital
expenditure and there is a spending freeze

6 because someone really hates leaves, its a phobia, and they have the
absolute power to do something about it, right now!

5 because thats the way we've always done it

4 because you might trip on that sand or leaf and then imagine where we'd
       be

3 because someone important stares out that window all the day, hates
clutter but welcomes the infusion of new people into the drab landscape
as they open up your car

2 your just making trouble, again. what was you name again?

1 because the head of facilities catches a bus

Maybe it's time for security to paint lines in the parking lot?

Wow! And I thought I was the only one with a 'tude.

Sorry, but given the numbers of cars stolen from and vandalized in the ZKO lot,
and the number of things stolen from the offices/labs, it seems that painting
lines in the parking lot might be more useful. At least with the redensified
offices in the basement, there might be some chance of having a place to park.

Even if you had the car theft on tape, it's unlikely that the police
would do anything. Having had my car stolen from the ZK lot by the
kids from Lowell, the police just politely fill out the paperwork and
tell you to file it with your insurance. The stolen car that was dumped
next to where mine was parked was simply towed away for the owner to
pick up. Mine was dumped in Lowell where I had to pay $120 to get it
from the towing lot. None of that TV stuff where they check for
fingerprints, and have any real interest in catching the thief. Car
theft, like laptop theft, is just too frequent for them to deal with.
It's easier to bag speeders and get revenue for it, then to stop this
    sort of crime.
