    Ray,

I guess it would help to define what the churchmember meant by "top 10
companies to work for." Oftentimes this means top 10 in sheer number
of employees. At one time Digital was the largest employer in MA,
outside of the public employee sector. We were eventually overtaken, I
believe first by Raytheon, and now perhaps by others. Even with the
downsizing of the past five years, though, I would suspect that we are
still on the top 10 list.

If the question was directed at quality of work environment and so
forth, we may not show up. So many of those surveys are either 100%
devoted to the financials (e.g. the ones in Business Week, Fortune,
etc.), or look at areas that are supported primarily during times of
good earnings. With our difficulties of the recent past, survival
becomes more important than quality of the workplace environment. One
can argue that the two go hand in hand, but it is a very skillful
company indeed that can manage to retain a good work environment when
    the house is on fire.

.. or the textile mill, to cite a recent Massachussetts example.

Sorry for deleting base note, complaint about profile name.
At times i forget it IS the 90's :-( Re-posted here

Someone from my church asked me the following question:

"Ray, do you know what the top 10 companies to work for in
Massachusetts are, and is Digital one of them."

In all honesty I couold not give her an answer. I know at one
time Digital was on the top 10. I have a couple of questions
myself: What are the top 10 best places to work in Mass.
Also what what factors determine who's on the top 10, etc.

    Thanks ray

I wouldn't be so sure of that. I find DIGITAL to be a great place to work.
May not be what it once was, (I wouldn't know, I've only been here a couple
years) but that doesn't mean it isn't a great place to work.

But quality of work environment is so subjective, I wouldn't place mush faith
in such a list anyways.

Digital was mentioned somewhat favorably in some of the accompanying articles.
Note that it was #1 in sales (up from 4) and #52 overall(not in the 1995 100).

I saw the article so I know it wasn't in the Boston Globe. It was
either in the Lowell Sun or as part of our town's weekly paper - the
insert that goes to every paper that the publisher puts out.

It listed us as the largest private employer in MA with 10-11K
employees, ahead of Raytheon, the second largest. At first I thought
they were using old information until I saw the figures. We used to
employ over 30K people in MA.

As I recall, the article didn't go into too much around the quality of
the companies, mostly sticking to numbers and what the businesses did.

I know I have the article in the 'papers-to-be-recycled' stack. I'll
see if I can dig it out and post the relevant parts here next week.

This is "best" according to business success, not "best" according to workplace
environment.
