5203.0. "Rumour - Oracle & Netscape Merger ??" by OTOU01::MAIN (Systems Integration-Canada,621-5078) Mon Mar 24 1997 18:52
This is real interesting rumour - Oracle and Netscape merger ???

* MERGER MANIA ABOUT TO STRIKE AGAIN?
It was rumored in DBC Stock Watch (March 10) that Netscape and Oracle
may be considering a merger. Well, there's nothing wrong with a little
friendly conversation about possibilities, and such a merger would
certainly give both Netscape and Oracle a better chance at beating
Microsoft in the marketplace. The positioning of the new version of
Oracle WebServer seems to hint at this convergence. Oracle web site
says, "Instead of competing against Netscape we are now positioned to
upgrade its functionality providing a unifying application platform and
a fault-tolerant Web server."
It's no dark secret that Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, wants to be
the most influential man in the PC market-a position long held by Bill
Gates, chairman of Microsoft. If the merger happens, it may turn out to
be even bigger news than 3Com's acquisition of U.S. Robotics. Neither
Oracle nor Netscape have commented further on this rumor.
