| Hi Stuart,
Yes, I understand your reply ! I am rather looking for references than for
a technical solution which I would find there. And maybe a good idea
that the field is aware of this issue ...
PS: I will add in your place :
What about note 5186 -> MLOPCS::IBM_AS400
and note 5179 -> VAXAXP::VMSNOTES

I am currently running Netscape V3.01 on my Alpha UNIX V4.0A...

| I'm Digital's onsite engineering manager at Netscape.
There is a difference between certification and "may run" as noted by
the base author. The servers are built and tested on UNIX 3.2c.
Therefore, the certification and support is on UNIX 3.2c.
There is some empirical evidence to suggest that most of the servers
actually run on Digital UNIX 4.0x, but at the same time, some empirical
evidence to suggest that problems have been experienced inside of
Netscape technical support.
There is a move underway to attempt to certify the SuiteSpot 2.2 Servers
on UNIX 4.0b.[also WNT 4.0...]This project, once undertaken and finished, would
help you.
Also, we are moving Netscape engineering off of 3.2c platforms onto 4.0b
platforms slowly but surely, which will help with the newer servers
currently under development.

5197.6 | They'll choose SUN ! | BRSADV::DESCHUYTER | De Schuyter@BRO DTN:856-7543 | Tue Mar 25 1997 04:54 | 16 |
| Hi Ed,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I understand that the certification is
underway. But what arguments would you use in my place ?
My customer is an important ISP and bought an Alpha 1000A.
He wants to use Netscape Mail server and Netscape Directory server
and now we have to tell him that his configuration is not supported!
I am affraid that his reply will be simple :
"I will go for SUN where there latest OS IS SUPPORTED !"

| As Ed has pointed out in his note, there is work currently underway
to perform certification of the Netscape products on Digital
UNIX 4.0b. A number of different avenues, including hiring some
contractors to work for Ed, are being tried with the goal
being to get the certification done as quickly as possible. One
of your concerns, the mail server, is currently in the process
of being certified. We hope that this process can proceed rapidly,
and finish soon. However, it will be weeks before this the entire line
is completed.
We're doing whatever we can to make sure that these products install
and run without problems. Thanks for letting us know that this is
a problem for you. Please continue to let us know where we can do
a better job.
Thanks,
b

re: Netscape products on NT platforms - are there any restrictions
with NT - Alpha ? Are there native Alpha versions available ? Have
the Netscape products been tested with FX!32 if no native versions
yet ? Any timeframes for native Alpha NT Netscape versions ?
Given recent desktop Alpha systems (500Mhz in $3k range), there
is now a requirement for native desktop browsers as well ..

5197.9 | native browsers --- no problem -- sorta | TROOA::MSCHNEIDER | [email protected] | Tue Mar 25 1997 19:04 | 3 |
| There are and have been for some time native browsers, both Netscape
and Microsoft on Alpha NT. Problem more often is the lack of native
plug-ins and FX!32 certainly has helped there.

5197.10 | NT/Alpha is behind, as usual :-( | pcivb1.vbo.dec.com::BERGER | Vincent Berger | Wed Mar 26 1997 07:57 | 11 |
| NT/Alpha versions from Netscape usually lag well behind Intel
versions, both for browsers and servers.
On the server side, currently almost no Netscape product supports NT
4.0 on Alpha, whereas most Intel versions do. See
http://www.netscape.com/comprod/server_central/product/pricing/index.

The browsers that are there (on VMS) are good, but they
represent a generation behind what Netscape currently has in
late beta testing (and for the Netscape servers it's two
generations behind).

5197.13 | about NT 4.0 | AXPBIZ::MOEHLENPAH | | Wed Mar 26 1997 19:39 | 11 |

The same certification process is being propsed for Alpha NT 4.0 as well.
The main problem has historically been an installshield problem where the
correct (i.e. corrected installshield for NT 4.0) version wasn't used to
build the kits that are shipping. Thus, problems during installation of
the product. I believe this problem was corrected for some products, but
the whole list may not have been addressed (hence the need for the
certification process).
