5192.0. "pc key map PF1-ENTER for vtx stock sale" by 40812::CHENG () Tue Mar 18 1997 11:03

    I am on disability and staying at home for a while. I need to sell some
    DEC EPP stock to pay for medical bill and my kids education bill.
    I have a pc at home. I usually use kermit to remote login via WATN to
    my OpenVMS system. I want to use vtx to sell some stocks. But I don't
    know how to map the pc keyboard at home to the PF1-ENTER command that
    is needed to complete the transaction. The PF1 key in our (DEC)
    workstations is the NumLock key on my pc keyboard. Does someone know
    how to may the PF1-ENTER command ? Is there any document that shows
    how to may other PC keys to our VT100/Workstation key pad and how to
    copy it over to my OpenVMS system

    	I have a Celebris 4100 here with an RT101 keyboard, and the NUM
    	LOCK key works just fine as PF1. Enter is in the same place as
    	on a VT keyboard also.

    	Try it in ELF if you can. Go into ELF and use NUM LOCK and "."
    	to exit just to make sure it works.

5192.2If you're using DOS Kermit you need NMLK_TSR.COMsmurf.zk3.dec.com::PBECKPaul BeckTue Mar 18 1997 11:5016
    It depends on what you're using for a terminal emulator, since
    that's what does the mapping of PF1 to a VTxxx escape sequence.

    If you (.0) are using the MS-DOS version of Kermit (i.e. MSKERMIT)
    you need a separate program like GOLD.COM or NMLK_TSR.COM to do the
    mapping for you. Also, some lower-end terminal emulators remap the
    PF1-PF4 keys onto the F1-F4 keys of the PC keyboard (which can be
    handy on a notebook that lacks a separate numeric keypad).

    A long time ago I put together a Kermit self-extracting kit (it's
    still at PCBUHD::SYS$UTIL:[DOSTOOLS.KERMIT]KERMKIT.EXE) that
    includes NMLK_TSR.COM and sets it up to work transparently if you
    copy the file to an empty directory and execute it there.

    If you use something like KEA! or VTstar, it'll do the mapping
    automagically.

    	Yes!! Silly me. My laptop's F1 key is what we know as PF1/gold.

    	[Right now I use Hyperterm to log in.]

    	Try that, .0.

If you have MS-DOS Kermit, you can also map the PF1 key to be any other key
that you want.

As suggested earlier, I would try using F1 as the GOLD key and see what
happens. On my Kermit distribution, it was already set up that way.

    Memorize:

    	GOLD = PF1 = <esc> O P

    that's Capital letter O and Capital Letter P

    So when you're stuck with a bad terminal emulator, but you can find the
    escape key, you can spell out GOLD the hard way.

    The DECterm implementation in eXcursion (which ships with PATHWORKS32
    for WNT and W95) works fine for "Num Lock" as the Gold key. It's the
    best terminal emulation I've found, especially for things like keypad
    mapping and cut-n-paste.

The touchtone system is at 508-493-6000 (DTN 223-6000). You will need to know
your security code which is printed on top right of your statement of
ownership.

That will work anywhere, at least if the ESC key sends an ESC. Many don't.

(try control-3, that gets ESC on many keyboards without a working ESC key)

    Yep, on this basic HiNote I use everyday, with either eXcursion or
    KEA!420, <PF1> seems to be [fn]+[F10] (Scroll Lock) but I tend to
    use John Henning's sequence but instead, generate the <ESC> with a
    [CTRL]+"[" The <ENTER> sequence is mapped to [fn]+[ENTER]

5192.14none of the suggestion workLEDER2::CHENGWed Mar 19 1997 11:5617
    I'm runnnig doskermit on dos 6.22. I've tried all suggestions in
    privious reply and none work. I have copied the kermit.exe into my
    openVMS account. Is kermit.exe a self extract file that need to
    run on the pc ? or is it a file run on the OpenVMS system ? Assumeing
    it is a pc executable file, after extracting it, do I run the
    nmlk_tsr.com before startup the kermit ?

    I've tried installing vtstar on my pc (486, dos 2.2, win3.1) 2 years
    ago. I've never been able to get it work on my pc (never get pass the
    big X on my screen). I've since upgrad my 486 to run 6.66 and wfwg
    3.11. Should I try to install vtstar again ?

    Thanks for the replies.

	A better place to ask would be the VTSTAR notesfile.

The file I pointed to is PCBUHD::SYS$UTIL:[DOSTOOLS.KERMIT]KERMKIT.EXE (not
kermit.exe), and it's a PC executable. If you download it (binary mode) to an
empty directory on your PC and execute it there, it should expand what you need
and create a KERMIT.BAT file that sets up NMLK_TSR for you. (This is, again,
assuming you have a normal 101-key PC keyboard, not a notebook.)

There's a KERMKIT.DOC file (text, not Word) in

PCBUHD::SYS$UTIL:[KERMIT]KERMKIT.DOC

I have no idea why it's not in the same directory as KERMKIT.EXE (that's not my
system).

    For the basenoter, logging in through watn - if the client on
    the vms system is anywhere near current, a RETURN from the LAST
    field on a form will FORM ENTER. You can try just hitting (several)
    RETURN(s).

    Or if you connect through RAS or when you are on the internal net,
    there is a vtx client for windows,in it's smallest form - without
    extra viewers it can be pulled from
    http://vtx-info.shr.dec.com:5010/tls27_nv.zip

    Tips, install with WINSOCK transport, not tcp/ip... you will need to
    know a local server, (or use welkin.shr.dec.com port 1111)
    and when installed, you will probably want to go under prefereces
    and check display messages in bar and don't display startup splash
    screen. Most people prefer the opposite of the default preferences.

    And form enter on the windows client is the check mark icon, not keys.

5192.18copied the files, but get garbage charactersLEDER2::CHENGThu Mar 20 1997 10:3425
    My pc is a generic pc (non-digital) with generic 101-keyboard (I
    think).

    I've copied over the kermkit.exe and extracted the files with no
    compliant. I've modified some of the files as indiated in the read.me
    file to reflect that my default directory is c:\kermit2. My system
    does not have a d drive, but I don't use zmodem, therefore I did not
    change any files to reflect the d:\download directory. I then cd to
    the kermit2 directory and run the kermit.bat file. Kermit came up OK.
    However, when I enter atdt3305110 (this is the local phone number I
    use for dialing in). I used to get the following messages when using
    the other MSKERMIT (V3.11) :
    	Connect 9600/ARQ/V32/LAPM
    	Please type your terminal Identifier

    But this time I get garbage characters. I hit return, and get more
    garbage characters.

    I did change dszport=2 for com2 in kermit.bat,    and set port 9600
    in mskermit.ini. So the baud rate should be OK. Why am I getting
    garbage characters ?

    Thanks

    This whole discussion probably belongs in the VMSZOO::KERMIT or
    NOTED::IBMPC-95 conference. Best way to diagnose this would be to
    see the two copies of MSKERMIT.INI -- the one from your existing
    MSKERMIT and the one in \kermit2 -- and look for interesting
    differences in setup.

    If you're "handy", you could try making backups of your mskermit.ini
    files, bringing the working mskermit.ini to the new directory, and
    appending the keyboard definition portion of the new mskermit.ini on
    the old one (so your port, baud, parity, etc. setup is the same as
    before, but the keycodes are from the kermkit version) and see if
    that helps, but I'd try eyeballing the two files for differences in
    basic setup first. KERMIT>SHOW COMM might also be instructive (first
    with the old version, then with the kermkit version).

    I don't know if you can still do this, but you used to be able to send
    an e-mail message to mts$::"mso::investor services" to sell stock. You
    need to include your name, badge number, social security number, and
    home address in the message. You can specify how many shares to sell,
    which specific shares, or sell all shares.

    The old mskermit does not has the mskermit.ini file. I did check the
    mskermit.ini in the kermit2 directory. It has a line says "set terminal
    vt320". I will check the other filesin the old kermit to see if
    anyfile contains these settings.

    I did use the touchtone phone to place the sell order today. Hope
    the stock don't come down tomorrow morning.

If you posted your sale request anytime close to the nearly 8:00pm
you posted this reply you won't sell until Monday.
There's a deadline for submitting sell orders of somewhere between
noon and 3:00pm eastern time for a next-day sale.
