5144.0. "Who knows the 'comparison-tables' ?" by TPLAB::VANDYCK (Web site story) Wed Feb 19 1997 02:36

I have in front of me a very interesting document.
It is a set of tables documenting all the characteristics
of the DIGITAL hardware (cpu, peripherals, a.s.o.). It's
about 50 pages, and is the most impressive collection of
capacity, performance, speed, ... figures that I have seen
in this company.

The name of this document is 'comparison-tables'. It used
to be available from OLHEAP::SYS$PUBLIC. The name of its
maintainer was Jim Fisher @FHO, DTN 471-5201.

The version I have is dated March 1994. A lot of new hardware
has appeared since that so this document is now largely out
of date.

I'm looking for a more recent version of those tables. The name
of the maintainer is not in ELF, so I suppose he has left the
company. The node OLHEAP is not reachable, and the DNRS database
pretends that it is now a PC, so I won't find it there.

Does anyone know anything about this document, latest version,
still maintained, who does it, access location, and so on ?
Does anyone have a more recent version than mine that I could
copy ?

	Thanks in advance,

		Marc in Brussels.

Jim Fisher was TFSOed long ago. The FHO office was closed long ago,
    too.

This document was a "midnight project" so I don't think you'll see a
    later version.

Jim Fisher was the unfortunate victim of a previous
round of downsizing. He did wonderful things and it
was a shock to all who knew him that he would even be
considered for separation from the company. I am 99%
sure that the "comparison table" work that he did left
with him. On a brighter note, he is doing well at
another company.

I have a June 1994 version, but only ever had the postscript file. It
was a very handy document. But I've never seen a later version.

The source file for the document was kept within the company
when Jim left but has not, to my knowledge, been updated at all.
It would have been a task to keep up with the various introductions as they
occured, but to try to gather the information now and bring it up to date
would consume an awful lot of manpower - a lot more than most folks would
have for a midnight project. I think it would be a worthwhile effort and
of comparable value to the field and our partners as the Golden Eggs, but
I don't expect you'd find anyone willing to fund it.
