5143.0. "Identifying distributor orders?" by ASABET::DCLARK (NP-complete) Tue Feb 18 1997 12:48

I'm trying to do some analyses on distributor orders vs. end user
orders. I can't find an easy way to identify distributor orders.
Is there any logic in the assignment of 9-character DEC Order
Numbers which would allow me to identify distributor orders?

    thanks - Dave

How about a customer name/number or identifying order format on
    	a PO?

well, the data sample I'm looking at has about 5900 DEC numbers
in it, and about 700 different customer names. About 3700 of the
DEC numbers have customer name = blank. Customer numbers map into
more than one customer name. What's identifying order format?

    thanks - Dave

Typically, a PO [purchase order] number will be unique to a spec-
ific customer, and the format of that PO number or order number
might even help to identifythe customer:

    	MOTOROLA - MOT12345, MOT00013

IE, a common prefix, or a standardized alphanumeric combination
    	or configuration.

However, if the data isn't entered/retained, it's very difficult
    	[if not impossible] to retrieve.

Keep in mind that I'm basing this on my own knowledge, and I do
realize that not all systems record/retain data the way ours does
here ... so don't think that you're doomed just because it looks
    	that way to me.

And also keep in mind that a customer might become a distributor
at times also. IE, sometimes the end user and sometimes a mid-
dleman for other end users ... and I don't think that your infor-
    	mation would reveal that.

Oh, yeah ... can you tie your info back to a more complete data-
base? Or is what you have as complete as you're going to get?

    Dave,

When you say "distributor order" are you referring to where
the order is being fulfilled (i.e. MICROAGE, TECH DATA)? If so, you
can use the ORS Document No. assigned by the Switch.

yes, that's what I'm referring to. The database I'm using is
a corporate database called DOC which gets its feed from DRC.
I don't know if the ORS Document No. is in there; I'll look
    for it.

I've found a list of distributors/resellers on the internal
web; bouncing that off the orders data 'by eyeball' looks
    promising.

Thanks to Moe Beauchesne and Paul for helping me out! I'm
a tad less baffled than I was a few days ago about the
mind-numbing complexity of Digital's order processing
    and fulfillment.

Also, as was pointed out to me, DOC gets its feed from FOCUS
    and common scheduling, not DRC.
