A real application with real benefits from VLM: Product Data Management
(PDM). Application names would be Metaphase, Sherpa and a couple of others.
A PDM system keeps track of all product related data throughout the
design and manufacturing process. This includes drawings, CAD models,
design specs, simulation results, quality data and so on.
This information is indexed in a central server, and the index data
can amount to several GB's in a large enterprise. Access to the index
is read in 90% of all cases, therefore VLM speeds up performance
significantly and leads to a good chance to win an application
benchmark, if it's set up correctly.
