There is an article in the February 1997 issue of BYTE with
the title "How to Make the World's Fastest CPUs". The article
is on pages 80NA1 - 80NA12. It describes Fab 6 housed at Digital
Semiconductor's Hudson, Massachusetts, campus. The article is
six pages, and includes six pictures plus descriptive text with
diagrams explaining the process of building transistors.
When I first saw the title of the article, I thought oh great,
who is claiming the fastest CPU now? I was however delighted to see
the picture on the first page, "Fab 6's main output: Alpha processors".
DIGITAL is never mentioned in the article, but "Open VMS running
on a fault-tolerant VAXcluster with disk-shadowing" makes an appearance.
Right in the middle of the article is a full two page add for Dell.
So save $5,000, spend a few bucks (US), and have a great tour.
